Dr Mahmood is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, appointed as the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Lead at Stepping Hill Hospital, responsible for developing endoscopy and ERCP services. He has a special interest in dealing with patients with colitis, chronic diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, acid reflux, jaundice, irritable bowel syndrome and dyspepsia - indigestion and weight loss. Dr Mahmood is an expert in diagnostic and as well as therapeutic endoscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and ERCPs.

Dr Mahmood graduated in 1982, initially working in general medicine and chest diseases, then moving on to the Republic of Ireland in 1991, where he qualified for his higher exam MRCP in 1996. Following this, he worked in different peripheral hospitals located in Ireland until June 1996 and gained broad experience in dealing with a variety of different diseases.

From July 1996 he worked and was trained in one of the busiest tertiary referral centres of Republic of Ireland and this centre is recognised for European fellowship, providing a great opportunity for learning and research. In 2002, Dr Mahmood was appointed as a clinical lecturer at Trinity College, Dublin, teaching and training medical students.

In 2003, he was appointed as Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist at North Cumbria University hospital. Within two years of the post, Dr Mahmood finished his thesis and was awarded MD, also becoming fellow of the college and an examiner of doctors of higher level. Dr Mahmood also developed inflammatory bowel disease, hepato-biliary and pancreatic services and endoscopy services.
