About

Dr Julian Fearnley was a medical student at St Thomas' Hospital Medical School, a House Physician at St Thomas's Hospital, Senior House Officer at St Bartholomew's Hospital and Medical Registrar at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Birmingham.Following this, Dr Fearnley had a period of research at the Institute of Neurology and the main publication from this work has become the 18th most cited paper in the field of Parkinson's disease, and has been referenced by 2,560 other papers. He returned to clinical training as a Neurology Registrar at the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery followed by Senior Registrar at the National Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital and the Chalfont Centre for Epilepsy. He was appointed as Consultant Neurologist at the Royal London Hospital in 1997 where he worked as a General Neurologist with a special interest in Movement Disorders including Tremor, Parkinson's disease and Dystonia.

He had a joint appointment at Newham District General Hospital for two days a week where he was single-handed with a very busy practice covering all aspects of neurology. He remained the only single-handed Neurologist in London and one of a few in the UK and after 20 years' service he opted for a change and left the NHS to practice independently.

He lives locally with his wife and five children and enjoys walking in Kent with his dog who never gets bored and never complains about the weather and getting wet.

Neurology symptoms can be very confusing and upsetting. During his 21 years as a neurologist, Dr Fearnley usually give a diagnosis on the first consultation together with an explanation of the symptoms you have been suffering, and often he finds this is all that is required. Dr Fearnley encourages patients to bring a friend or relative for support, and if you have suffered a blackout, bring the person who saw the episode where practical.
