About

Dr Anirban Maitra is a senior Consultant Paediatric Respiratory Physician at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Manchester University Hospitals, the largest single-site tertiary children’s hospital in the UK. He is also the Director of the Cystic Fibrosis unit at the hospital and had been the Clinical Lead in bronchiectasis and primary ciliary dyskinesia treatment. Dr Maitra sees private patients at Alexandra Hospital and Spire Manchester Hospital.

Dr Maitra graduated from Calcutta Medical College, Asia's second-oldest medical school practicing European Medicine, and has been practicing in the UK since 1997. For the past 17 years, he has been involved in the tertiary management of children with complicated respiratory problems.

Dr Maitra completed the National Grid Training in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine from Sheffield Children’s Hospital in 2009 and has been working as a Consultant since. He has worked as a Consultant at University Children’s Hospital in Leicester, and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. He has also worked in tertiary institutions overseas before joining Manchester Children’s Hospital in 2015.

Dr Maitra believes that respiratory problems are widely prevalent among children, which makes it the most significant reason for parents to consult a medical professional. He judiciously employs detailed but focused history, lung function testing, baseline allergy, and immune investigations, and appropriate imaging such as Chest X-Ray and High-Resolution CT scan to evaluate his patients and reach a diagnosis. He also undertakes highly specialist flexible bronchoscopic procedures to reach a diagnosis.

Alongside his clinical duties, Dr Maitra was employed as a Research Fellow at Bristol Children’s Hospital and has widely published in highly-rated academic journals such as BMJ, Thorax, Clinical, and Experimental Allergy. He is extensively involved in research and teaching undergraduate students, postgraduate students, junior doctors, and allied healthcare professionals, and is a regular speaker at national and international conferences.

Dr Maitra has a wonderful, caring nature. He takes time to explain the situation and what he will do to resolve it to both parent and child. He makes the child feel extremely relaxed. We have been under his care for a couple of years now and the difference in my daughter's asthma is unbelievable. I would highly recommend him to anyone with respiratory illnesses, you will be in the best hands possible.

Explanation

Dr Maitra has been wonderful with our son. Our son is 11 years old and has had asthma since a young age. Over the years, he has had hospital visits and steroid treatment due viral wheezes' and the usual triggers of changing seasons and colds. After a bad virus in March 23, resulting in a long term cough and excess phlegm, we sought help with Dr Maitra. His treatment and advice has been invaluable and a complete game changer. Our son is back to himself and able to cope with common colds and triggers. Dr Maitra tested our son for allergies and put him on a new plan and a new inhaler. Our son has been on the new inhaler for 9 months and we saw a difference within 1 month. He is able to compete in high level sports again (previously he was struggling with the cough) and he has grown in confidence. He does 2-3 hours sport a day and is not held back at all. In addition, it is the first winter where we have not required antibiotics or a steroid as the new inhaler is doing such a good job. After 9 months we are moving onto a new inhaler and Dr Maitra has been great in explaining why and talked us through how we manage our son's asthma going forward. I feel incredibly lucky that we are under the care of Dr Maitra. Dr Maitra's manner is warm, professional, kind and humble. He is lovely with children and always makes time for his patients with appointments. Dr Maitra's care is tailored to the child and his expert knowledge on asthma and respiratory conditions has really made a difference to our son.
