Dr Tamer Rizk is a Consultant Paediatric Neurologist with an international career spanning the UAE, Canada, Saudi Arabia, the UK and Egypt, with clinical, academic, research, teaching and leadership experience across paediatric neurology and paediatric clinical practice. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, and a member of several professional societies including the British Paediatric Neurology Association, International Child Neurology Association, International Neurotoxin Association, Canadian Paediatric Neuromuscular Group, Emirates Paediatric Neonatal Medicine Society, Saudi Paediatric Neurology Association and HIMSS.
Currently practicing at the American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr Rizk has had several consultant roles as well as an academic appointment as Professor of Paediatric Neurology at Alexandria University, Egypt. In Canada, he served as Assistant Professor of Paediatrics/Paediatric Neurology at Dalhousie University, Clinical Assistant Professor at Memorial University, and Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at Saint John Regional Hospital. His earlier career included Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at Al-Takhassusi Hospital, Dr Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Group, Riyadh, and Consultant and a Neurology Fellow at King Fahad Medical City. In addition to this, Dr Rizk worked as a Locum Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at the Armed Forces Hospital Southern Region in Khamis Mushayt, Saudi Arabia, and at Queen's Medical Centre within Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, UK. His earlier roles included Paediatric Specialist and Emergency Resident in Riyadh and General Practitioner and House Officer positions in Egypt.
His clinical and academic interests include the full range of paediatric neurological conditions Dr Rizk has made substantial contributions to research, including publications into the ketogenic diet in paediatric epilepsy and a randomised, double-blind study evaluating topiramate and levetiracetam as monotherapies in children with different types of epilepsy, for which he was Principal Investigator.
Dr Rizk’s publications and scholarly contributions cover paediatric epilepsy, infantile spasms, Tourette syndrome, dystonia, spasticity, cerebral palsy, vagus nerve stimulation, as well as neuromuscular disorders and complications. He has authored and edited books and chapters including Dystonia: Different Prospects, Botulinum Toxin-A in Paediatric Spasticity, and a chapter on benign childhood epileptic syndromes and contributed to audits concerning paediatric neurophysiological procedures, sedation, epilepsy and neurological therapies. Dr Rizk has also served on editorial boards and as a reviewer for multiple medical journals and publishers, and contributed to the KFMC E-Knowledge Exchange Monthly Newsletter.
His research work has received formal recognition, including the Excellence in Research Award at the 2017 Innovation Summit in Athens and third place at the KFMC Annual Research Conference in 2010. He has presented research and clinical work at international, regional and national conferences across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia. Alongside this Dr Rizk has also contributed to specialist meetings and workshops relating to SMA, epilepsy, ketogenic diets, spasticity, neurocritical care, EEG, neuro-oncology, genetics and paediatric nutrition.
His contribution to medical education is extensive. He has held academic teaching appointments in Egypt and Canada, served as Senior Lecturer and Supervisor at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, and provided paediatric neurology teaching at King Saud Bin Abdul-Aziz University for Health Sciences and King Fahad Medical City. He has supervised interns, residents and paediatric residents rotating through paediatric neurology, served as Lecturer at the National Neuroscience Institute, and organised and coordinated the Paediatric Neurology Board Clinical Examination accredited by SCFHS. His documented teaching includes grand rounds, departmental teaching sessions, board examination preparation, clinical skills education, nursing education and numerous lectures and workshops.
He has also contributed to professional education through moderating, chairing and serving on scientific and organising committees for major paediatric neurology and neuroscience conferences, including the Mind Bloom Advances in Child Psychiatry & Neurology Conference, Middle East Paediatric Neurology Congress, Saudi Paediatric Neurology Society conferences and multiple Saudi International Paediatric Neurology Conferences.
His wider leadership experience includes serving as Acting Chair of Neurology at ACPN in the UAE and Acting Chair of Paediatrics at HMG in Saudi Arabia, chairing multidisciplinary complex-case meetings, coordinating teaching and clinical schedules alongside contributing to quality, mortality and morbidity committees.
