Dr Prasan Rao

Dr. Prasan Rao is a highly accomplished Specialist Ophthalmologist with nearly 30 years of experience in the field of ophthalmology. He completed his medical studies at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India, where he achieved distinction in Ophthalmology. He then pursued his postgraduate ophthalmology training at L.T.M. General Hospital and Sir J.J. Group of Hospital in Mumbai. During the early stages of his career, he was among the pioneering resident ophthalmologists to routinely perform non-phaco small incision cataract surgery in Mumbai between 1995 and 1996.

Dr. Rao then undertook a fellowship program in vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery at the renowned Sankara Nethralaya & Vision Research Foundation in Chennai, India. This specialised training gave him skills in the diagnosis and treatment of various ophthalmic conditions, including vitreo-retina-macular diseases, medical and surgical retina, ocular inflammation and uveitis, ocular tumours, ocular imaging, trauma, and cataract.

Dr. Rao holds a Fellowship in Ophthalmology from The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is also board-certified by the National Board for Ophthalmology in India. Furthermore, he is a member of several professional organisations, including the European Society of Vitreoretinal Surgery (EVRS), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), and the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS).

Dr. Rao has been practising in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since June 2003. Notably, he made significant contributions to the field of ophthalmology in the UAE, such as introducing retinal detachment surgery for retinopathy of prematurity in 2003. He has also used various advanced ophthalmic techniques and treatments in the region, including innovative therapies for conditions like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Over the years, Dr. Rao has successfully performed a substantial number of cataract surgeries using phacoemulsification, vitreoretinal surgeries, and combined cataract and vitrectomy procedures in the UAE.

Beyond his clinical and surgical practice, Dr. Rao actively engages in training fellow ophthalmologists, conducts valuable clinical research, publishes articles in peer-reviewed journals, and presents scientific papers at both local and international conferences.
