About Dr. Ihab Abbas

Dr. Ihab Abbas is a highly accomplished Orthopedic Consultant and Foot & Ankle Surgeon with over 25 years of international surgical experience across Hungary and the UAE. He is also the Chief Medical Director (CMO) at True Life Specialty Hospital. He is recognised for his work in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for calcaneus fractures, as well as his contributions to trauma surgery, arthroscopy, and joint replacement procedures.

Dr. Abbas completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the Medical University of Debrecen, Hungary in 1996. He went on to achieve dual board certifications in General Surgery (2002) and Traumatology (2006) in Hungary. His early career was spent as a Consultant Surgeon in Hungary (1996–2009), before relocating to the UAE, where he served as a Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at SEHA’s Al Ain and Tawam Hospitals for over a decade (2009–2022).

He has since held senior consultant positions at Lauretta Medical Center (2022–2024) and currently at True Life Speciality Hospital in Al Ain (2024–present). In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Abbas has contributed to academia as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at UAE University (2020), mentoring future generations of surgeons.

A passionate innovator, Dr. Abbas established the Calcaneal Clinic at Al Ain Hospital and has developed new surgical techniques for humerus and calcaneus fractures, advancing orthopedic care in the region. His professional expertise extends across foot and ankle surgery, upper limb and knee procedures, and polytrauma management.

Dr. Abbas is also an active researcher, lecturer, and international conference presenter, with numerous publications and textbook contributions, including as co-author of the Springer Textbook of Emergency General Surgery (2023). He serves on the editorial boards of Archives of Bone & Joint Surgery and CPQ Orthopedics.

His dedication and excellence have earned him multiple accolades, including Physician of the Month (Al Ain Hospital, 2015) and recognition among SEHA’s Top 1000 Employees (2019).

Dr. Ihab Marwan Abbas is an orthopedic surgeon in the Foot & Ankle Unit, with a focused clinical interest in the treatment of calcaneus (heel bone) fractures and hindfoot trauma. He manages both intra-articular and extra-articular calcaneal fractures, providing evidence-based care tailored to individual patient needs.

He is experienced in minimally invasive surgical (MIS) techniques for calcaneal fracture fixation, with emphasis on soft-tissue preservation, reduction of wound complications, and optimization of functional outcomes. For complex fracture patterns, Dr. Abbas performs open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) to achieve precise anatomical restoration of the subtalar joint and hindfoot alignment.

Dr. Abbas is committed to patient-centered care, focusing on restoring hindfoot biomechanics and supporting structured rehabilitation, in line with international standards of orthopedic practice within the GCC healthcare system.

Flexible unreamed locked nailing

Flexible unreamed locked nailing

A modified implant using unreamed locked intramedullary nailing of the humerus allows a stable fixation of humeral shaft fractures and immediate postoperative functional recovery. The type of nail used has angulations at its two ends: between them there is a long cleaved flexible shaft. The implant has two forms: the thicker form is cannulated and the thinner one is solid. This type of nail was used to stabilize fractures 2 cm below the surgical neck and 4 cm proximal to the olecranon fossa. This nail was used on 74 patients who had suffered humeral shaft fractures. This type of nail can be inserted by either antegrade or retrograde methods. All of the fractures operated on, healed in an average of 6 months with excellent postoperative shoulder and elbow function. In cases of pathological fractures, stability was maintained up to the end of the patient's life. There were no occurrences of vascular and nerve iatrogenic injury, septic complications, or implant failure. Postoperative radial nerve palsy was temporarily displayed in 3 patients, all of whom showed spontaneous recovery.

Management of Animal Bites: A Global Perspective

Management of Animal Bites: A Global Perspective

The relationship between for humans, animals, and environment is balanced since human existence. Animal bites humans is a major neglected global health problem. Dog and cat bites are most common in USA and Europe, snake bites in east Asia, and crocodile and camel bites in Africa. We aim to lay the principles of managing these animal bites. Bites located on the hands, arms, and legs comprise 70–80% of animal bites. The head and neck are involved in 10–30%. The occurrence of wound infection depends on the nature and location of the wound, the patient’s immunity, and the type of attacking animal. Principles of managing animal bites include addressing immediate life-threatening injuries; taking a detailed history of the animal bite; evaluating tetanus and rabies risk; administering antibiotics and antivenom (when needed); wound debridement and revision; addressing the risk of necrotizing fasciitis and compartment syndrome, and finally delayed closure/skin graft and fracture management when the wound becomes clean. Using the Haddon matrix is very useful for injury prevention. It includes preventing the animal bite before it occurs, reducing its impact if it occurs, and treating it properly after it occurs.
