Prof. Gerald Zimmermann

Prof. Dr. Gerald Zimmermann is a Consultant in the Department of Orthopaedics at Medcare Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital, where he specialises in Sports Medicine. He studied medicine at the Universities of Erlangen, Mannheim, and the Texas Medical Centre in Houston, USA, and has earned multiple postgraduate qualifications in General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Orthopaedics and Trauma, Specialised Trauma, Sports Medicine, and Knee Surgery—all accredited by the German Board. He also obtained his PhD from the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

A member of prestigious organisations such as the German Society for Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery (DGOU), the German Knee Society (DKG), the German Shoulder and Elbow Society (DVSE), the European Society of Tissue Regeneration in Orthopaedics and Trauma (ESTROT), the working group on Arthroscopy (AGA), and the German Society of Traumatology (DGU), Prof. Zimmermann has spent much of his career in Germany. He initially worked with the BG Trauma Center Ludwigshafen and later joined Theresienkrankenhaus in Mannheim, where he served as a senior consultant and eventually headed the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Department.

His expertise covers a wide spectrum of conditions, including correction surgeries for congenital and post-traumatic deformities, arthroscopic knee surgeries (including ACL, PCL, and meniscus reconstructions), endoprosthetic replacement of the hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow, regenerative musculoskeletal therapy, knee cap disorders, leg length discrepancies and corrections, and cartilage cell transplantation.

Globally recognised for his contributions to musculoskeletal tissue regeneration, Prof. Zimmermann’s research on growth factors and their clinical applications has been extensively published in top international journals and presented in over 500 scientific talks. His current focus is on the clinical application of adult stem cells for bone and cartilage regeneration, and he has been awarded the prestigious Herbert Lauterbach Prize by the German Orthopaedic and Trauma Society.
