Dr. Georgie Thomas

Dr. Georgie Thomas is an experienced Interventional Cardiologist with more than 12 years of independent consultant practice and extensive expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of complex cardiovascular disease. He currently serves as Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Head of the Department of Cardiology at Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi, a position he has held since 2014. His clinical practice encompasses radial and femoral coronary interventions, primary angioplasty, chronic total occlusion (CTO) interventions, pacemaker and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation and programming, structural heart procedures including ASD and PDA device closure, paravalvular leak interventions, post-CABG vein graft interventions, and comprehensive outpatient and inpatient cardiac care.

Dr. Thomas completed his Doctorate of National Board (DNB) in Cardiology at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research between 2003 and 2007 after obtaining an MD in Internal Medicine from Government Medical College and Wanless Hospital, Miraj. He earned his MBBS from Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences in Maharashtra, India. He holds permanent specialist registration with the Medical Council of India, specialist registration in Cardiology with the Health Authority Abu Dhabi, and has successfully completed all three stages of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).

Before relocating to Abu Dhabi, Dr. Thomas was Head of Unit 2 and Interventional Cardiologist at Little Flower Hospital in Kerala, India, where he established primary angioplasty and CTO intervention programmes and led the management of intensive cardiac care services. During this period, he achieved international recognition for performing what was reported as the first successful percutaneous primary coronary intervention in a patient with acute myocardial infarction following vasculotoxic viper snakebite. He also served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Cardiology at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, contributing to postgraduate education, research, and clinical training.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Thomas worked as a Consultant Cardiologist at Modern Hospital and as a visiting Interventional Cardiologist at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, helping establish and expand cardiology services. His training included extensive exposure to coronary angiography, echocardiography, cardiac imaging, heart failure management, arrhythmia services, cardiac catheterisation, paediatric cardiology, and advanced critical care. He also held academic and supervisory roles throughout his training and consultant career, contributing to the education of medical students, residents, and cardiology fellows.

Dr. Thomas has been involved in clinical research, audits, and teaching throughout his career and is a Life Member of the Cardiological Society of India and the Indian Medical Association.
