What is a Sport & Exercise Medicine Doctor?

Sport and exercise physicians – also called SEM doctors – treat sports-related injuries in professionals and amateurs. They sit at the top of a multidisciplinary team giving care, advice and treatment as well as advice about maximising performance, including coaches, physiotherapists, osteopaths and more.

They have a broad knowledge about the many areas of the body, systems and mechanisms that can go wrong for someone who loves playing sports, as well as their treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention. This can involve drugs, nutrition, psychology, and more, all supporting your full potential and helping you to stay at your best.

When to see a Sport & Exercise Medicine Doctor?

As a specialist in your own body, someone who cares for it and nurtures it with your sport in mind, you know when something has gone wrong. Much of the time you can feel the damage happening, whether it’s an injury or something else. Your GP might be your first stop as an amateur, depending how serious it is, or you might go straight to a specialist. As a professional it’s most likely you’ll go directly to your own specialist or the sports doctor who looks after your team.

What conditions does a Sport & Exercise Medicine Doctor treat?

Doctors in sport and exercise medicine treat a great many conditions including:

  • Soft-tissue injuries to the muscles and ligaments like sprains and ruptures
  • Stress fractures
  • Diabetes
  • Exercise-led asthma
  • Tendinopathies
  • Musculoskeletal disorders and conditions
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Obesity
  • Osteoporosis
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Stress
  • Mental illness

What subspecialties are included under Sport & Exercise Medicine?
