What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy promotes recovery from illnesses, injuries and disabilities by restoring movement and bringing back functional ability. Taking a holistic approach, they involve the patient in their own treatment. Much of the time you’ll be given exercises to do at home as well as during your appointment, and each subsequent appointment tracks your progress and tweaks your exercises so they work as well as possible.

Physiotherapists do their work using gentle movements, stretching, exercise, manual manipulation therapies, education and advice. They treat people of every age, and as well as helping people manage pain they can also help prevent disease.

What procedures can you find at a Physiotherapy clinic?

  • Education and advice about matters like safe lifting and carrying, and injury prevention
  • Exercises to improve general health and mobility, and to strengthen various areas
  • Manual therapy to relieve pain and stiffness, and drive better
  • Whole-body exercise like walking and swimming
  • Hydrotherapy – also called aquatic therapy
  • Acupuncture

What should you expect at a Physiotherapy clinic?

When you arrive your physio will ask you about your pain and how long it’s been there, the source of it and more. You’ll be able to ask questions of your own. They will probably examine the area that’s troubling you, to see how much movement there is and how much your movement is impaired, and they’ll go through some initial exercises with you, which you might also be asked to do regularly at home. Subsequent  appointments often involve checking your progress with another examination and tweaking the number and difficulty levels of the exercises you take home with you. If lifestyle, dietary or other advice is appropriate, they will give you that too.
