Dr Stephen James Cousins

Dr Stephen James Cousins is a dedicated and compassionate General Practitioner who provides comprehensive primary care. Having grown up in Newcastle, New South Wales, his path to medicine was inspired by a personal health journey during his youth. This early experience instilled in him a deep empathy for patients and a lifelong commitment to healthcare. Before embarking on his medical career, he completed an electrical apprenticeship in an underground coal mine, bringing a unique and diverse set of practical life experiences to his clinical practice.

Dr Cousins began his academic pursuits in the field of biology, where he was awarded Class 1 Honours for his research on kangaroo reproductive physiology. He subsequently undertook a PhD candidacy investigating vaccines for cystic fibrosis. Realising that his true passion lay in direct patient care, he transitioned to clinical medicine. After completing his medical degree and qualifying as a doctor, he initially gained experience in obstetrics and gynaecology before choosing to specialise in General Practice, finding it to be the ideal avenue to support families and individuals across all stages of life.

Throughout his career, Dr Cousins has worked in various rural and regional communities across Queensland and Victoria, as well as in the Australian Capital Territory. He has developed a broad range of clinical expertise, with particular interests in women's health, minor surgical procedures, child and adolescent medicine, and men's wellness. He is also highly regarded for his supportive approach to mental health, ensuring that his patients feel heard, respected, and actively involved in their own healthcare journeys.
