Gosford, 2250
Dr. Philip Markham is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in the treatment of sports injuries and arthritic conditions affecting the hip, knee and shoulder. He has an interest in knee preservation surgery (knee realignment and robotic assisted partial knee replacements) in addition to shoulder and knee arthroscopy, and joint replacements.
He completed his undergraduate studies at Edinburgh Medical School in Scotland, where he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree. During his medical school years, he had the opportunity to complete an elective term at St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, Australia, which sparked his interest in working in Australia. After completing his internship, Dr. Markham began 3 years of Basic Surgery Training in Edinburgh, where he gained cross-specialty surgical training. Much of the training was spent in general surgical specialties, providing a solid foundation in surgical skills and techniques. Upon completion of post-graduate exams he became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCSEd) and made a move to work in Australia.
After working for a period in regional New South Wales, Dr. Markham gained entry to the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Training Program in Sydney, where he spent 5 years undergoing orthopaedic training which included time spent at the Royal North Shore and the Royal Prince Alfred hospitals. By the end of Orthopaedic training, Dr. Markham had gained over 10 years of orthopaedic training experience and had performed over 8,000 operative procedures. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) after completeing the final examinations.
Dr. Markham completed subspecialty Fellowships in Hip, Knee, and Revision Joint Replacement Surgery under the guidance of Prof. Paul Smith in Canberra. He also completed a Fellowship in Reconstructive and Shoulder Surgery on the Central Coast with Dr. Ed Bateman. These fellowships provided Dr. Markham with a comprehensive breadth of expertise in upper and lower limb orthopaedic surgery. Following the Fellowship year, he was awarded the Fellowship of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA).
After completing his fellowships, Dr. Markham worked extensively for 5 years as an orthopaedic surgeon in public hospitals in Sydney, the Central Coast and the Illawarra, performing surgeries for both trauma and elective cases. He opened his private practice SJS Orthopaedics (Sydney Joint Specialists), and he now consults and operates in private practice at Gosford, Wollongong and Macquarie University Hospital, Sydney. He specialises in sports injuries and joint replacement surgery and welcomes all private referrals for hip, knee and shoulder conditions.
