About Dr Phil Lockie

Dr Phil Lockie is an Upper GI, Bariatric, Robotic and Hernia Surgeon based in Brisbane, Australia. He practises privately through his specialist surgical practice and operates at North West Private Hospital and St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital. He also works within the public healthcare system as a Senior General Surgeon at Ipswich Hospital.

Dr Lockie specialises in bariatric surgery, hernia surgery and minimally invasive upper gastrointestinal surgery, with expertise in robotic and laparoscopic procedures. His clinical interests include laparoscopic incisional hernia repair, laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, anti-reflux surgery, gallbladder surgery, gastroscopy and colonoscopy procedures. He is also a registered endoscopist with the Gastroenterological Society of Australia.

Dr Lockie completed his surgical training in Belfast, Northern Ireland, before undertaking an oesophageal fellowship at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. He was awarded the Intensive Care Society Travelling Fellowship, which included training experience in Denver, Memphis and Seattle, before relocating to Australia in 2003. In Australia, he completed further fellowships including an Upper GI Fellowship at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney and a laparoscopic fellowship in Canberra.

In 2004, Dr Lockie was awarded the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland Gold Medal at the Intercollegiate Examination in General Surgery. His robotic surgery training has enabled him to manage complex bariatric and hernia procedures, including revisional and complex obesity-related surgery.

Over the past 20 years, Dr Lockie has developed a multidisciplinary bariatric practice focused on long-term weight management and comprehensive patient care. Alongside his multidisciplinary team, he supports pre- and post-operative care and established one of Australia’s longest-running bariatric support groups.

Dr Lockie has an interest in medicolegal issues and has appeared as an expert witness in civil cases and the coroners court. He is the medicolegal respresentative on the ANZMOSS board. 

Dr Lockie is a member of the Australian Hernia Society, the European Hernia Society, and the American Hernia Society

Dr Lockie sits on the Board of the Australia New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society (ANZMOSS) and is a Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic Bariatric Society.
