He subsequently spent a significant portion of his career working in rural General Practice in Mackay, which provided him with invaluable exposure to a wide range of complex medical conditions. Additionally, he completed a sabbatical with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Mount Isa, further broadening his clinical expertise in remote and challenging environments.

Dr Comben obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Queensland in 1979. Demonstrating his commitment to maintaining the highest standards of clinical practice, he achieved Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 2009.
