About Dr Matthew Cranstoun

Dr Matthew Cranstoun is a dual fellowship-trained ophthalmologist with subspecialty interests in Cataract, Refractive and Oculoplastic Surgery, based at Pine Rivers Eye Centre in Strathpine. His clinical practice includes cataract and refractive cataract surgery, oculoplastic surgery, pterygium surgery, medical retina & glaucoma management. His oculoplastic interests include blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, eyelid tumour management and lacrimal surgery for tear duct obstruction and the management of watery eyes.

Dr Cranstoun completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland before undertaking ophthalmology training in Queensland. He subsequently completed advanced training in cataract and anterior segment surgery at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane, and Oculoplastic fellowship training with Professor Timothy Sullivan at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Queensland Children’s Hospital.

His research with Professor Sullivan was recognised with the Dermot Roden Prize at the 2018 RANZCO Scientific Congress for work on ultra-low-dose radiotherapy in the treatment of extraocular lymphoma. He has also received awards for educational surgical videos.

Medical education forms another part of Dr Cranstoun’s professional work. He is an Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland Medical School and presents at local and national educational meetings as well as previously being a Visiting Medical Officer at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where he was involved in teaching ophthalmology trainees. Dr Cranstoun has served as Medical Director of Pine Rivers Eye Centre since 2019. At the Pine Rivers Eye Centre his focus is on the optimal patient experience and delivering exceptional outcomes.
