About Dr Matthew Bayfield

Dr. Matthew Bayfield is an experienced cardiothoracic surgeon with a broad range of expertise in coronary artery surgery, aortic root and arch surgery, correction of pectus defects, pacemaker and defibrillator implantation, surgical treatment for ischaemic cardiomyopathy, and lung cancer surgery.

Dr. Bayfield has been one of Australia's leading coronary surgeons since 1996, following his fellowship in the USA. He is recognised for pioneering innovative techniques in reduced access coronary surgery and playing a pivotal role in the development of off-pump and minimal access coronary surgery approaches. His focus on arterial grafting, particularly using internal mammary and radial arteries, has been key in ensuring the longevity of bypass grafts and delivering outstanding surgical outcomes.

Having performed thousands of coronary artery bypass operations, Dr. Bayfield maintains a comprehensive database of his surgical cases, conducting annual peer-reviewed audits to ensure the highest standards. He is committed to multidisciplinary care, engaging in weekly discussions with specialists to provide optimal treatment for patients with complex heart conditions across the region.

Dr. Bayfield has been performing aortic root and arch surgery since 1995, after completing his Cardiovascular Fellowship at the University of Virginia. His approach, which focuses on minimal access incisions and short cardiopulmonary bypass times, has improved recovery times, with the addition of antegrade cerebral perfusion and cerebral oxygen saturation monitoring during arch surgery.

Dr. Bayfield has a special interest in corrective chest wall surgery, with expertise in correcting pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum defects using techniques such as Nuss bar implantation under video-assisted control and open radical sternochondroplasty.

Dr. Bayfield is highly skilled in device implantation, including pacemaker and defibrillator implantation, and has extensive experience in cardiac resynchronisation therapy. His routine practice includes pacemaker and defibrillator implantations at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Strathfield Private Hospital.

Dr. Bayfield worked alongside Professor Brian McCaughan from 1996 until Professor McCaughan’s retirement in 2020. Their partnership, known for a multidisciplinary approach to lung cancer treatment, continues to influence Dr. Bayfield’s work. He collaborates with respiratory physicians and oncologists at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, ensuring comprehensive care for lung cancer patients.

Dr. Bayfield is committed to delivering the highest quality of care, and his leadership in cardiothoracic surgery, along with his dedication to ongoing improvement, has earned him a reputation for excellence in his field.
