About A/Prof Lih-Ming Wong

A/Prof Lih-Ming Wong is a Urologist with a subspecialty focus on managing urological cancers - specifically cancers of the prostate, bladder, kidney and testis.

His surgical practice centres around robotic-assisted procedures for complex urological cancer surgery. He has performed >500 robotic cases with extensive experience in both pelvic (prostate and bladder) and upper tract (kidney, adrenal) surgery. A/Prof Wong is a well recognised teacher and mentor of robotic surgery. He trains the registrars at St Vincent's and Austin Health, and has travelled to Tasmania and rural Victoria to proctor other urologists.

A/Prof Wong's broader work also covers urinary stones and lower urinary tract symptoms. For men experiencing difficulties with urination, he offers treatments including UroLift, TURP, Rezum and Holmium enucleation of the prostate.

Having grown up in Australia since age 1, attending Melbourne Grammar School on a full music and academic scholarship, A/Prof Wong studied medicine at Melbourne University. Urology training was completed in 2009, before spending one year at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and two years at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto undertaking uro-oncology fellowship training.

His academic work has developed in parallel with his clinical career: he has completed postgraduate qualifications in Surgical Anatomy and Surgery as well as a Doctor of Medical Science through the University of Melbourne. Appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, University of Melbourne, he leads research teams examining prostate cancer imaging, including MRI and PSMA-PET/CT, developing AI to analyse surgical videos, and biospectroscopy to diagnose cancer. A/Prof Wong has presented his research at multiple international meetings.

A/Prof Wong is a board member of the Aitkenhead Centre for Medical Discovery, a collaborative biomedical engineering centre purposed to accelerate the translation and commercialisation of research.
