Dr Segal completed his medical education at The University of Melbourne, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. He subsequently attained his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 1980. Demonstrating a strong commitment to the advancement of his profession, he has served on the Panel of Examiners for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and contributes to medical education as a member of the John Murtagh Update Course Committee. He also dedicates time to teaching clinical skills and general practice to undergraduate medical students.

Throughout his career, Dr Segal has developed particular clinical interests in aged care and sports medicine. His expertise in sports medicine is highlighted by his previous roles as a Club Doctor for local and national Australian rules football clubs.
