About Dr Kalman Piper

Dr Kalman Piper is a Sydney shoulder and elbow surgeon with private consultations at Lakeview Private Hospital in Norwest, in Sydney's Hills District. His subspecialty interest is reverse shoulder replacement, now the most common shoulder replacement performed in Australia (AOA National Joint Replacement Registry, 2025).

Dr Piper completed his MBBS at the University of Queensland in 1998 and his FRACS (Orth) with the Australian Orthopaedic Association in 2009. He spent the following year as a fellow of Dr Laurent Lafosse at the Alps Surgery Institute in Annecy, France, training in advanced shoulder reconstruction, both open and arthroscopic Latarjet procedures, and minimally invasive shoulder replacement.

In his Sydney practice he performs the Latarjet procedure for complex instablity cases, reverse total shoulder replacement and anatomic total shoulder replacement, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, Bankart repair, distal biceps repair, tennis elbow surgery, elbow arthroscopy, endoscopic carpal tunnel release, and complex upper-limb fracture fixation.

Operating locations are Lakeview Private Hospital in Norwest for private patients, the Mater Hospital in North Sydney (part of the St Vincent's Health Australia group) for private cases on request, and Westmead Hospital for public-system patients and on-call orthopaedic trauma. Dr Piper has been a Visiting Medical Officer at Westmead since 2015.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr Piper is a clinical lecturer at Macquarie University and a regular international teaching faculty member at events run by ESSKA, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), and orthopaedic associations across Asia-Pacific. He has performed live surgical demonstrations for surgeon audiences in Australia, India, China, Thailand and France.

Dr Piper saw my elderly mum at short notice, after she broke her arm. Goal was to avoid an op, and this was achieved with tx plan and check-in appointments. So Plan B not required. The first short notice appointment was really appreciated. And admin. staff great too. Thx B&F Mann
