Dr Joshua Hammerschlag

Dr Joshua Hammerschlag is a General Surgeon with sub-specialist expertise in Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery. He completed the highly regarded AANZGOSA (Australian & Aotearoa New Zealand Gastric & Oesophageal Surgery Association) post-fellowship training program and has advanced experience in managing both benign and malignant oesophagogastric conditions. His areas of expertise include oesophageal and gastric cancer, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), hiatus hernias, oesophageal motility disorders, and metabolic and bariatric surgery, including revisional procedures.

Dr Hammerschlag graduated from medical school in 2010 and began his medical career at Monash Health, where he also completed his General Surgery training. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in General Surgery before undertaking three years of post-fellowship sub-specialty training. After being accepted into the AANZGOSA program, he completed advanced Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery positions at Christchurch Hospital in New Zealand and The Austin Hospital in Melbourne. During this time, he gained extensive experience in both open and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

In addition to his Upper GI and bariatric work, Dr Hammerschlag maintains a broad general surgical practice. He regularly performs gallbladder surgery, simple and complex hernia repairs, and emergency abdominal procedures, bringing comprehensive surgical expertise to both elective and acute cases.

He currently consults and operates privately at Peninsula Private Hospital and holds public appointments at Frankston Hospital and Monash Health. His approach is centred on safety, compassion and achieving the best possible long-term outcomes for his patients.
