Dr Jose Leal

Dr José Luis Leal Fernández is a medical oncologist with specialist training in internal medicine and medical oncology. His clinical and research experience spans lung cancer, melanoma, thoracic malignancies and genitourinary (GU) oncology. He has worked in clinical oncology services and research institutions in Chile and Australia, combining patient care with an interest in clinical trials and the development of cancer treatments.

Dr Leal Fernández developed his early clinical career in Chile, undertaking specialist training in internal medicine at the University of Chile and Hospital del Salvador before completing medical oncology subspecialty training at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

From 2014, he held medical oncology appointments at several Chilean institutions, including the Instituto Nacional del Cáncer, Fundación Arturo López Pérez and Clínica Universidad de los Andes. These roles provided experience in specialist cancer care and the management of patients with a range of oncological conditions.

In 2019, he moved into clinical trials research in Australia, joining the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute as a Clinical Trials Fellow in thoracic and genitourinary oncology. In February 2020, he began a Medical Oncology Research Fellowship at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, focusing on lung cancer and melanoma.

Dr Leal Fernández has a particular interest in cancer research and clinical trials, especially in lung cancer and melanoma. His research experience includes work within specialist oncology and cancer research institutions in both Chile and Australia.
