Dr John Leaney

Dr John Leaney is a highly qualified and dual fellowship-trained Ophthalmologist who specialises as a Glaucoma Specialist, Neuro-ophthalmologist, and Cataract Surgeon. With a patient-centred approach, he is dedicated to providing comprehensive, high-quality ophthalmic care. Dr Leaney is committed to delivering advanced medical and surgical treatments to manage complex eye conditions, ensuring his patients receive reassuring and tailored care to protect and improve their vision.

Dr Leaney began his academic journey by earning a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering with First Class Honours, before pursuing his medical training at the University of Sydney, where he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). He completed his initial clinical training as an Intern and Resident at a major teaching hospital in Sydney, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Macquarie University, focusing on the early detection of glaucoma using electrical brain impulses. Dr Leaney completed his specialist training as an Ophthalmologist at a leading eye hospital in Sydney. He then undertook two prestigious international fellowships: a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship at a world-renowned eye hospital in London, and a glaucoma fellowship at a prominent hospital in Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO).

In his clinical practice, Dr Leaney offers expertise in a wide range of advanced surgical and medical interventions. He performs complex cataract and glaucoma surgeries, utilising modern techniques such as trabeculectomy, tube shunt insertions, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). His dual fellowship training uniquely positions him to differentiate complex optic nerve diseases from glaucoma. Alongside his clinical work, Dr Leaney serves as an Honorary Associate at the University of Sydney, actively contributes to multi-centre clinical trials as a Clinical Investigator, and has published extensively in leading international peer-reviewed journals.
