Dr Joan Haliburn

Dr Joan Haliburn is a highly qualified Consultant Child, Adolescent, Family, and Adult Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist. She provides comprehensive psychiatric assessments and psychotherapeutic interventions for patients ranging from infancy to adulthood. Dr Haliburn is dedicated to supporting individuals and families navigating complex emotional and psychological challenges, with a particular focus on the emotional health of pregnant women, parent-infant relationship difficulties, and attachment issues. Her clinical approach is deeply collaborative, aiming to foster sustainable recovery and emotional well-being for patients and their families.

Throughout her distinguished career, Dr Haliburn has developed extensive expertise in treating a wide range of mental health conditions. Her areas of clinical interest include complex trauma, eating disorders, and obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. She is highly skilled in managing major depression, separation anxiety, school refusal, suicidal ideation, and self-harming behaviours. Additionally, she provides early intervention and assessment for early psychosis, as well as specialised support for parent-infant-child dyads where attachment issues impact the child's development and well-being.

Dr Haliburn obtained her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and subsequently completed a Master of Medicine in Psychotherapy at the University of Sydney. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and an International Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr Haliburn completed advanced training in the Conversational Model of psychodynamic psychotherapy. She is a Founding Member, former President, and former Director of Training of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychotherapy, and has served as a Senior Clinical Lecturer. Her professional affiliations also include memberships with the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation, the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders, and the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry.
