Dr Jan Geertsema

Dr Jan Geertsema is a highly dedicated Consultant Psychiatrist who provides compassionate, comprehensive mental health care. He specialises in both General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, offering a supportive environment for patients navigating complex psychological challenges. Dr Geertsema values a personalised, developmental, recovery-focused, and family-inclusive approach to mental health. By weaving evidence-based best practices into a holistic view of wellness, he aims to deliver individualised care that addresses the unique needs of each patient.

Throughout his career, Dr Geertsema has held diverse clinical roles across various settings, including consultation liaison psychiatry, day hospital programmes, acute inpatient care, and emergency departments. In addition to his clinical practice, he is actively involved in academic and professional leadership. He serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Queensland. He is also a committed member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) Faculty, contributing to the Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry divisions.

Dr Geertsema obtained his medical degree (MBChB) from the University of Pretoria in 1999. Following his relocation to Australia, he completed his local psychiatric training and secured his Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) in 2014. He also holds a Certificate in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is certified by the Australian Medical Council (AMC). To maintain his alignment with global standards of care, Dr Geertsema holds international membership with the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
