About Dr James Roche

Dr James Roche is a highly accomplished Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in hip and knee surgery. He graduated with distinction from Imperial College School of Medicine, London in 1999, winning the Norman Lake prize for the highest mark in Surgery. His advanced orthopaedic training was completed at Nottingham University Hospital, a renowned centre for orthopaedic trauma, and he was admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2008.

Dr Roche further refined his expertise during a year as an Arthroplasty Fellow in Perth, where he gained valuable experience in complex joint replacement. He later completed a second fellowship focusing on revision hip and knee replacement. In 2012, he was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Forth Valley Royal Hospital, where he played a key role in transforming hip fracture care into one of the nation’s leading units.

Since moving to Rockhampton in 2016, Dr Roche has pioneered robotic hip and knee replacements in Central Queensland, becoming the first surgeon to use the Mako robotic system in 2020. He performs a high volume of primary and revision hip and knee replacements, arthroscopic knee surgery, foot and ankle procedures, and a broad range of trauma treatments. Dr Roche is also a dedicated educator and researcher, with his work widely cited and presented at prestigious national and international forums.

I’m 60 and 6 weeks post surgery having a TKR and at 4 weeks could walk unassisted and off the pain meds, I just use voltarin gel or fiso cream if needed now. Everybody was great! A big thank you to Dr Roche, Dr Phillip Tarrant and the theatre staff, Ramsay health & Luke from Ramsay health plus in helping me getting back on track to being normal again.Ice & Physio is the key to success here, if you don’t bend it, you will lose it and you’ll be back in surgery having a manipulation done and I was sure I didn’t want to be doing that! Patience and rest, drink water eat well and yes take the pain meds at the timeframe recommended, don’t try and be brave it’s honestly not worth it in the early stages! Looking forward to walking pain free very soon!

The experience was far better than I thought it would be. Dr Roche and his Team were experienced and professional. They also knew that I was very nervous and they were able to keep me calm.

Everything went great. Listen to the doctor, follow instructions and follow your Physiotherapist to the letter. Pay full attention and you’ll be up and back to normal in no time.

My final visit was last week and showed that my knee replacement had achieved the results we were after. It has given me full use of my knee and the confidence to engage in all my previous activities. Thank you, James.

Dr Roache did a full knee replacement for me in November. My leg was extremely bent and i havent been able to straighten in over 25 years. My leg is now straight and bends so well. I couldnt be happier.

I had total knee replacement surgery with Dr Roche. He was very professional, very caring, compassionate, and obviously highly competent in performing the surgery, and in all associated pre and post surgery consultations. My mobility and quality of life has now improved dramatically. I genuinely believe that choosing Dr Roche to perform my surgery was an excellent decision and the outcome has been beyond my expectations.
