Dr Ian Byard

Dr Ian Byard is a senior Medical Oncologist with a career spanning nearly three decades of specialist oncology practice. Based in Tasmania, he currently consults and treats patients at Icon Cancer Centre Hobart. His practice combines evidence-based cancer treatment with careful attention to each patient’s diagnosis, treatment objectives and individual circumstances.

His areas of expertise include gastrointestinal cancers, breast cancer, prostate and other urological cancers, melanoma, skin cancer, lung cancer and the broader management of solid tumour malignancies. He accepts referrals across cancer types and works closely within multidisciplinary teams to coordinate treatment and ongoing care. Research forms an important part of Dr Byard’s clinical career. He has served as a Principal Investigator in clinical studies involving colorectal cancer, melanoma and breast cancer, and remains actively involved in cancer trials. His published research also includes participation as a local principal investigator in major studies examining treatments for metastatic prostate cancer and advanced renal cell carcinoma.

Dr Byard places particular emphasis on clear communication, personalised decision-making and evidence-based treatment. He works collaboratively with patients, families and multidisciplinary cancer teams so that treatment plans reflect both the clinical characteristics of the cancer and the patient’s individual priorities, while providing consistent support throughout their cancer journey.
