About Dr Gert Tollesson

Dr Gert Tollesson is a senior and highly accomplished Consultant Neurosurgeon with an extensive international background in managing complex brain and spinal conditions. Originally trained in Scandinavia, he earned his medical degree from the University of Umeå in 1993 and gained specialist neurosurgical qualifications in Sweden and Norway before relocating to Australia. During his early career he served as an officer in the Royal Swedish Navy and represented Sweden in the Naval Pentathlon. He later left the Navy to pursue medicine but continued his interest in diving medicine and hyperbaric oxygen therapy through training others.

With a career spanning more than three decades, Dr Tollesson possesses broad expertise across adult and paediatric neurosurgery. He performs a wide range of intracranial and spinal procedures, using advanced microsurgical techniques and innovative technology to support precise surgical management. His approach combines sophisticated neurosurgical techniques with individualised care, with treatment tailored to each patient’s condition and goals and focused on helping patients achieve the greatest possible level of independence.

Beyond the operating theatre, Dr Tollesson has made significant contributions to the neurosurgical community through professional leadership and education. He has served as Chairman of the Neurosurgical Society of Queensland and Secretary of AOSpine, as well as representing neurosurgery on the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Queensland State Committee from 2016 to 2019.
