Associate Professor Emmanuel Karantanis is an Obstetrics and Gynaecology Consultant who specialises in Urogynaecology, based in the St George Area. He is committed to women’s health, and after his extensive training is able to provide a compassionate, personalised and attentive approach to care both throughout pregnancy, childbirth and beyond. His urogynaecological expertise means that he is able to treat a variety of disorders of the pelvic floor which cause issues such as urinary incontinence and prolapse. His proactive approach in this area aims to improve the quality of life and confidence of those he works with. As well as providing excellent surgical care, he cares about the experience and bonding of the mothers and babies he looks after, for example being an advocate for skin-to-skin contact as soon as possible after birth regardless of delivery type at the hospital he worked at.
He graduated from the University of New South Wales with honours, and additionally pursued a PhD from the University of New South Wales following this. He became a consultant in 2005 and since then has worked across the delivery suite, pelvic floor unit and manages a clinic for women with severe birth injuries. As part of his extensive training in obstetrics and gynaecology, he worked for 2 years in London, before completing further subspecialty training in urogynaecology in Australia.
A/Prof Karantanis is an active researcher who regularly contributes to the scientific literature in his field. He is a Conjoint Associate Professor with the University of New South Wales.
