About Dr David Swartz

Dr David Swartz is a Consultant Gastroenterologist with a patient-centred approach, focusing on each individual rather than solely on symptoms or a disease label. Dr Swartz employs the latest evidence-based practices and advanced endoscopic techniques to ensure the best possible outcomes for his patients.

He graduated from medical school in Western Australia in 2001 and relocated permanently to New South Wales in 2003. He completed his specialist training at Wollongong and Bankstown Hospitals and has been practising as a Gastroenterologist since 2010.

To further his expertise, Dr Swartz undertook post-fellowship training in Therapeutic and Interventional Endoscopy at the renowned Duke University Medical Centre in the United States. He is the only fellowship-trained interventional endoscopist in the Illawarra region. After completing his fellowship in 2013, Dr Swartz joined the gastroenterology practice of Dr Chris Hatton, subsequently taking over the practice following Dr Hatton's retirement in 2016. He now works alongside gastroenterologists Dr Jeremy Humphris and Dr Dean Al-Hajirri.

Dr Swartz practices in all areas of gastroenterology, with particular interests in high-quality colonoscopy and the management of diseases affecting the pancreas and bile ducts. In addition to his private practice, he holds a Staff Specialist position at Wollongong Hospital and serves as a Clinical Senior Lecturer with the University of Wollongong School of Medicine.

He is an active member of the ISHLD colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team and currently chairs the ISHLD upper gastrointestinal cancer multidisciplinary team.

Dr Swartz was very professional but mindful of the reaction we would likely have based on what he was explaining to myself and my wife re my condition. He took the time the next evening to ring us to ensure we had understood everything he explained.

Bedside manner is very important to me. I only spoke to Dr Swartz briefly before my procedure, but he answered all my questions, reassured me and had a calming nature that made me feel at ease.

Whilst in hospital was told because had private health cover that they could organise colonoscopy and gastroscope with 24-48 hours as not done whilst in hospital. Unfortunately due to other conditions was 3 1/2 weeks later. This was stressful. Once arranged and required further action this was done very quickly.

Zoom consultation was very reassuring. Dr S listened to complex health issues and clearly understood my husband's situation. He offered appropriate options for further investigation without anaesthetic and explained clearly how this could be achieved. We feel confident about trusting Dr S to provide excellent health care and support.

I was quite anxious about my colonoscopy but Dr Schwartz was so friendly, professional and personable, that I felt much more at ease. He explained how the procedure would go and made me feel comfortable. I appreciated the report on discharge and the prompt follow up call to explain results and answer any questions.. Highly recommend Dr Swartz as a consultant.
