About Dr David Chieng

Dr David Chieng is a well experienced and highly trained Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at Alfred Hospital. He has a particular focus on managing heart rhythm disturbances, encompassing cardiac arrhythmia ablation (including SVT, Atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia) and cardiac device implantation (including: pacemaker, defibrillator, cardiac resynchronization therapy, conduction system pacing).

In addition to his expertise in heart rhythm disorders, Dr Chieng adeptly manages various adult cardiovascular conditions, including cardiovascular risk assessment, coronary artery disease, and congestive cardiac failure.

His academic journey began at the University of Western Australia, where he earned his medical degree in 2010. He received multiple academic prizes during his medical degree, including the prestigious Ellen Haberfield Prize for Pathology, and the Glaxo Smith Kline Prize for Pharmacology. Dr Chieng proceeded to complete his cardiology advanced training in Perth before undertaking a rigorous four-year clinical fellowship in electrophysiology and pacing at the Alfred Hospital and Royal Melbourne Hospital. During this time, he completed his PhD, supported by combined NHMRC/NHF postgraduate research scholarships and the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute Bright Sparks scholarship.

Dr Chieng's contributions to clinical research have earned him widespread recognition, with an impressive tally of 23 young investigator awards. Among his notable achievements are the Christopher O'Connor Award for Outstanding Scholarship (American College of Cardiology, 2024), Paul Korner Medal for Outstanding PhD Achievements 2021, and Young Investigator Awards at esteemed conferences such as the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society Congress. Additionally, he has been honoured with the Noel and Imelda Foster Prize for Cardiovascular Research 2022 and the Heart Failure Prize at the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand ASM 2022.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements Dr Chieng was awarded the highly prestigious University of Melbourne Chancellor's Prize for Outstanding PhD Thesis in 2024, and becomes the first electrophysiologist in 20 years to be awarded this award from the university. He was also awarded the highly prestigious University of Melbourne Dean's Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis in 2024
