Prof. David Castle

Prof. David Castle is a highly respected Consultant Psychiatrist who provides compassionate, holistic care to adult individuals. He is dedicated to helping patients gain self-efficacy and empower themselves to actively manage their own mental health. Rather than focusing strictly on diagnostic categories, Prof. Castle prioritises respect, integrity, and understanding each patient as an individual. His patient-centred approach aims to foster self-worth and support patients in engaging meaningfully with their families, friends, colleagues, and wider society.

With a broad range of clinical and research interests, Prof. Castle, who also serves as a Professor of Psychiatry, specialises in complex mental health conditions. His areas of expertise include schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) spectrum disorders. He also has a particular interest in disorders of body image, such as body dysmorphic disorder, as well as the impact of licit and illicit substances on the brain and body. Furthermore, he is actively involved in clinical programmes addressing the physical health of those experiencing mental illness, and the mental health of individuals with physical health conditions.

Prof. Castle obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Cape Town in 1985. He went on to complete a Master of Science and a Doctor of Medicine, and undertook specialist training in clinical research and psychiatry at a prestigious psychiatric hospital and institute in London. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, having obtained his Fellowship in 1999, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the United Kingdom. Additionally, he holds professional memberships with several international bodies, including the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry, the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and the International College of OCD and Related Disorders.
