Dr Christopher Yu

Dr Christopher Yu is a cardiologist at One Heart Centre, consulting at North Sydney. He is the first staff cardiologist at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, Honorary VMO at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and a researcher at the Heart Research Institute. Previously he worked as an Assistant Professor and Staff Cardiologist at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Toronto General Hospital (ranked second best hospital in the world by Newsweek) and University of Toronto, Canada prior to his return to Sydney.

Dr Yu looks after the full range of adult cardiac problems — chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, high blood pressure, cholesterol, heart failure and complex valve disease — and holds subspecialty qualifications in two areas.

The first is advanced multimodality cardiac imaging — echocardiography, cardiac MRI and CT coronary angiography. With this subspeciality knowledge, he is able to determine the choice of test can be matched to our clinical question being asked rather than to whatever is available to achieve a diagnosis faster or optimise your cardiovascular risk stratification. Dr Yu has completed the American National Echocardiography Board Examination and has CT Coronary Angiography accreditation.

The second is cardio-oncology: caring for the heart before, during and after cancer treatment. Certain cancer therapies such as chemotherapy, targeted therapies and immunotherapies can cause heart failure, rhythm problems, pericardial and atherosclerotic disease. Dr Yu completed a cardio-oncology fellowship at Toronto General Hospital, Canada and is certified in Cardio-Oncology by the International Cardio-Oncology Society, where he is also the co-chair of the Imaging Working Group. His other leadership roles in cardio-oncology include being on the editorial board of the European Heart Journal – Cardio-Oncology and the European Society of Cardiology Diagnostic Working Group.

Dr Yu works closely with referring GPs and specialists to provide a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to manage patient’s cardiovascular issues so that they understand their diagnosis and are empowered to achieve their best outcomes.
