Dr Abay Sundaram is an Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Murdoch, Perth. He specialises in lower limb surgery and has particular expertise in managing trauma, including soft tissue and fracture care, as well as joint replacements and sports injuries. Dr Sundaram is passionate about seeing patients and beginning their treatment as quickly as possible. He is passionate about providing comprehensive and holistic care for his patients, and feels that areas like physiotherapy, diet, mental wellbeing and available care at home are all important factors influencing surgical outcomes. He works with his patients and other healthcare professionals in order to ensure that those he treats are optimised for surgery and post-operative recovery from a surgical and holistic angle.
Dr Sundaram gained his degree in Medicine from the University of New South Wales in 2011. He completed specialist orthopaedic training in Perth, before becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2023. Dr Sundaram has trained internationally, and completed two competitive fellowships in the United Kingdom to gain additional specialist clinical experience. He spent 12 months working at a major trauma centre (St George’s Hospital London) where he was able to gain experience managing complex fractures and soft tissue injuries. He spent an additional 12 months in Oxford, where he worked in a hospital with a particularly high case load, allowing him to gain a vast amount of operative experience. This fellowship particularly focussed on the importance of peri-operative optimisation, and also day case and ambulatory surgery.
Dr Sundaram values working collaboratively with colleagues, and due to his experience and contacts, he is able to discuss challenging cases with other specialist colleagues in Perth and internationally with patient consent. Outside of work, he lives with his wife, two sons and dog Reggie. He loves spending time outdoors with his family, and is a fan of sports, in particular cricket, rugby and the NFL.
