Dr Rao attended Sydney Grammar School before pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1995. He later underwent Orthopaedic surgical training in Newcastle and in 2008, completed his fellowship in Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgery under the guidance of Dr Terry Saxby in Brisbane. The following year, he was awarded his Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgery fellowship by the Australasian College of Surgeons. Dr Rao has furthered his surgical expertise through additional training by participating in various courses in Thailand, the USA, and Australia.

The clinic is based at 12 Mitchell Street, Merewether, situated at the corner of Union and Mitchell Street, Merewether. Surgical procedures are conducted at Lingard Private Hospital.
