Njernda Aboriginal Corporation

Njernda Aboriginal Corporation is a community-controlled organisation dedicated to the health and wellbeing of the Aboriginal community in Echuca and the surrounding areas. Established in 1974 as the Echuca Aboriginal Co-operative, it was renamed in 1990 to Njernda, a Wemba Wemba term meaning 'to know our living culture'. The organisation is committed to supporting Aboriginal self-determination and provides a comprehensive range of services designed to be culturally appropriate and led by Aboriginal people. Njernda Aboriginal Corporation takes a holistic approach to health, recognising the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual wellbeing for individuals, families, and the wider community. Its purpose is to deliver programmes and services that enhance the overall quality of life for the local Aboriginal population. The corporation works across various sectors, including health, housing, education, and employment, to achieve these aims. Guided by the values of its Elders, Njernda has grown significantly since its inception to address the needs of its community. The organisation provides a safe and supportive environment, fostering cultural strength, healing, and resilience. Through its diverse programmes, Njernda aims to empower community members, support families, and provide leadership and direction for younger generations to ensure a strong cultural identity and future.
