About
Mr Maurice O'Flaherty is a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon who specialises in disorders of the foot and ankle. He has expertise in all conditions of the foot and ankle including hallux valgus (bunions), lesser toe deformity correction, sports injuries including ligament reconstruction, and arthroscopy. Mr O'Flaherty's special interest is in the treatment of resistant cases of achilles injuries and tendinopathy. He works closely with sports physiotherapists to look after elite sportspeople.
Mr. O'Flaherty completed his medical degree (MB BCh BaO) at Queens University Belfast in 2002, after which he went on to pursue surgical training on the Northern Ireland Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training scheme in 2007. He obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (Trauma & Orthopaedics) in 2012 and went on to take up a place on the prestigious Surrey Foot and Ankle Fellowship in London, continuing his surgical education.
He has a wide professional portfolio of qualifications including an MSc in Sports & Exercise Medicine from the University of Bath. During this training in this field he worked with doctors and allied health professionals across sport and exercise medicine, including Premier League Football and Rugby Union. This training complements his current practice and he works with many high-level sportspersons including GAA players, Ulster Rugby, Ulster Hockey, NI Netball and Irish League Soccer.
Mr O'Flaherty currently works in Belfast at the Royal Victoria Hospital and Musgrave Park Hospital. He has an active role in research and has published his work in multiple journals. In addition, he received the Irish Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Prize for his work. His current topics of interest are sporting ankle injuries and achilles tendon and plantar fascia disorder. Mr O'Flaherty is also involved in medical education and regularly presents to GPs and other medical professionals in the field of trauma, foot, and ankle conditions.

Mr O’Flaherty is very clear and inspires confidence. His explanation of the procedure, expectation of recovery time and progress was helpful and accurate. His bedside manner is also considerate and helpful.

Broke my foot whilst on holiday in 2022. When I got home, I was treated by Dr O’Flaherty and can honestly say the experience was excellent. He was very informative and gave me and my GP regular written updates in subsequent appointments regarding my recovery. Easily the best experience I have ever had regarding injury treatment in the health service. Would recommend Dr O’Flaherty to anyone with a similar injury.

Mr O'Flaherty has a very calming manner and really put me at ease before my cheilectomy. He explained clearly the procedure in a way that didn't cause alarm and it went exactly as he described.

Everything explained in detail and in language that one could understand. Maurice put me totally at ease , he is a real gentleman and made me laugh too. I have to go back and have my other foot reconstructed soon and have no hesitation in doing this as I know Maurice and his team will look after me. The aftercare is second to none.

Got matter of fact diagnosis and help to fix the problem, pain has been treated without surgery, which was my fear.
