Mr Riley has a very professional but friendly manner. I found him thorough, efficient and realistic. I cannot thank him enough for ending what has been a very painful and frustrating year.

Overall experience I cannot rate Mr Riley highly enough, especially if you are anxious about seeking medical help and surgery. At every part of my journey from making the decision that I required surgery through the rehabilitation, he provided me with the information I needed that made me feel I was in control of the decision making, . He well and truly went above and beyond to put me at ease to hand over trust and control to allow him to operate, something that had stopped me seeking help sooner. Too often surgeons assume that patients should just conform, and don’t appreciate that whilst to them surgery is an everyday occurrence, to the patient it is a life event and a period of ultimate vulnerability. Mr Riley ensured that I was treated as an individual at every stage, and helped me manage and overcome my fears and barriers to achieve my personal goals, he has truly given me my quality of life back. I am now symptom free and back doing everything I want to be able to do, and no words can express how grateful I am to him. He isn’t just an incredibly skilled surgeon, he is an exceptional human being, who’s calm and active listening approach genuinely goes above and beyond to ensure the patient is at the centre of the process and in control of their journey. Bed side manner This is where Mr Riley truly stands out from other surgeons, I was incredibly anxious of the thought of requiring surgery, and had delayed surgery for several years due to the fear of complications and previous bad experiences with anaesthetics and recovery. However, my symptoms escalated to a position where my work and hobbies were so limited, that my mental health was also being affected, and my fear of surgery prevented me from seeking help. Being medical myself, I was relatively knowledgeable of the clinical aspects of the surgery and recovery process, however my biggest barrier was being able to hand over the trust and control to someone else, at an incredibly vulnerable time. Mr Riley was quite exceptional at recognising and understanding the psychological aspects of undergoing surgery, from start to finish his calm and empathetic approach empowered me to be able to feel comfortable with the decision making process, by alleviating my fears and helping me to overcome the barriers without pressure, and nothing was too much trouble. Explanation Mr Riley is incredibly knowledgeable, but has a unique ability to translate the medical knowledge in a way to ensure that as a patient you genuinely understand what is going on and what to expect. He explained the full process, the relevance and appropriateness of the different options available, both surgical and conservative and the role I needed to play as a patient in helping me help myself. However, he did this in a way that it was clear he understood how what he would do would impact me as an individual with my specific concerns and expectations. He was also thoroughly invested in the aftercare and rehabilitation process, arranging my post-operative rehabilitation prior to the procedure so I felt confident that everything was covered and I didn’t have to think or worry about anything. I had total confidence in his ability at every stage and felt able to have open and honest conversation, and that I was listened to at every decision making point.

I always felt I was under the very best of care from Mr. Riley. I have had this same procedure carried out before on my hands, roughly 9 times previously, and my hand actually healed faster this time than ever before.

From the start everything was explained to me in detail as to what was wrong with my arm and the route that we would take to resolve my problem. We started with physio which didn't help and then I was told I needed an operation. The operation was a success (very neat scar). I was told that it would take up to a year to heal and I can honestly say I'm on course for that. I reckon I'm about 80% there :)

An first rate surgeon who gives confidence to the patient and gives them the time to ask questions with clear answers. Addresses patient preferences e.g. with anaesthetic and delayed starting the list because of my flip-flopping on regional vs general anaesthesia. Goes through consent procedure carefully e.g. explaining CRPS. It is also very clear he has an excellent working relationship and communication with other important professionals such as physio, and arranges joint appointments to better address holistic patient needs. He makes himself easily available should patient have further questions down the line. I have had excellent outcome from my surgery and would recommend him as a hand surgeon without reservation.

Mr Riley operated on each of my hands over the course of three months, restoring abilities that I had lost increasingly over the last 3-4 years. His skills both as surgeon and communicator are exemplary. His friendly, reassuring and confident mannerism, together with his ability to explain the science behind his actions, even made the overall experience a pleasant one, particularly as I started to notice the very welcome improvement during subsequent weeks, during which he saw me again to follow up on each operation. I would also add that his physio, Ms Lacey, was also wonderful.

Mr Riley performed a percutaneous fixation of my left scaphoid several weeks after the original wrist fracture. There were concerns that without this procedure the bone might have either taken a very long time to heal or not healed at all. The surgery was explained and performed extremely well and healing was achieved rapidly leading to complete recovery with full range of movement. I am now happily playing golf again...!

Mr Riley rescued me when I was at risk of having some real problems with my wrist. He saw me and operated at very short notice. Throughout he was unfailingly kind and encouraging to me. He explained everything that was going to happen in the operation and the recovery and through his explanations gave me the confidence that it would all go well. The proof is in the pudding as 9 months after my operation my wrist operates absolutely normally and I don't even think about the anxiety it caused me at the time I broke it. I would not hesitate to recommend him to others and do so regularly!

Doctor Riley was able to help me with a suspected wrist fracture and ligament damage at the peak of the pandemic. Without MRI and without the possibility of a surgery, he followed me step by step in the physiotherapy to a full recovery
