    About

Mr Syed Aftab is a Consultant Spinal Orthopaedic Surgeon and the Clinical Lead for Spinal Surgery at Barts Health NHS Trust, based at the Royal London Hospital. He studied medicine at Pembroke College, Cambridge University and Edinburgh University. He underwent higher surgical training in Orthopaedics and Spinal Surgery on the London NE Thames rotation at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore.

He also gained a Master of Science at University College London in Trauma and Orthopaedics during his training. Syed completed advanced fellowships in Spinal Surgery at the Royal London Hospital. Furthermore, he continues to broaden his experience with visitations to international centres of excellence for spinal surgery (Antwerp Belgium, Bordeaux France, Neustadt Germany and Orlando USA).

Syed has been pioneering the iMAS technique in the UK, using micro access techniques developed by Dr Robert Masson at Neurospine Institute, Orlando, USA (a Federally accredited Centre of Excellence).

Syed believes that the best outcomes for patients can only be achieved when decisions are carefully considered and works within the framework of a multidisciplinary team. Prior to being appointed as the Clinical Lead for Spinal Surgery at Barts Health NHS Trust, he was Clinical Effectiveness Lead for Orthopaedics at the Royal London. He is actively involved in teaching other doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.

Syed is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London and Module Lead for Spinal Trauma, both teaching and organising the spinal teaching programme for postgraduates studying trauma and orthopaedics.

Syed has published widely in a number of peer-reviewed medical journals and is actively involved in research into spinal surgery. He is also a reviewer for submissions relating to spinal surgery for various academic journals. He has presented at national and international conferences.

Syed is the first surgeon in the U.K. to perform robotic-assisted spinal surgery. He has been developing this area and is currently already on the second generation robot. His NHS practice is the first in the U.K. to offer robotic surgery routinely. He believes that innovation and skill is vital to progress and will soon offer this technological leap to private patients also.

Dr. Seyed Aftab, treated me for a serious discitis, which required a number of visits with him at his clinic and as an in-patient at Cromwell Hospital, as well as numerous tests (X-rays, IRM, Cat-Scan guided biopsy, blood tests etc), complex painkiller and antibiotics prescriptions, and a long hospital stay at Cromwell hospital to administer the required IV antoibiotics treatment. Dr Aftab was excellent at explaining his therapeutic choices and reassuring me on the evolution of my illness, and the faavourable prognosis. Hi personal assistant at LIPS, Marina was fantastically helpful. Ultimately the treatment and care by Dr Aftab was not only successful but all along he was extraordinarily reassuring and kind. Getting in touch with Marina at LIPS or through to Dr Aftab himself when needed was always easy and fast and Marina in addition made communicating with my private insurance provider much easier. All in all a extremely positive experience, given the challenging circumstances.

    Patient seen for:
Mr Aftab was the first person who I didn’t have to fight to explain how I was feeling, he understood and led me through the process of treatment with confidence, whilst keeping in mind what would be the best course of action for me. He answered any questions clearly and took the time to explain things thoroughly. He managed to encompass a professional manner with an approachable friendliness - excellent.

    Patient seen for:
I can't speak highly enough of Mr Syed Aftab and his team. I was fortunate to be under his care for a back pain which was causing major discomfort effecting my physical and emotional well-being. From the initial consultation through to my post op meeting, I found him to be extremely professional throughout and really helped me understand the diagnosis and the treatments available. Taking a conservative approach initially through pain management and physio, we together determined this was not going to resolve the issue and agreed to go through a surgical procedure (discectomy) to resolve. Thankfully the procedure was a success and has had an immediate positive impact on my physical well-being. The entire process was made so much easier through the care, professionalism, efficiency and friendliness of the entire LIPS team - Thank you Syed and team.
