Mr Ferris has an easy manner and through email and leaflet and face to face discussion was able to inform me and reassure me perfectly

I found Mr Ferris very reassuring. His explanations were clear and concise regarding the procedure and measured with regard to outcomes. He explained what was happening throughout the procedure in a very calming manner. He was particularly helpful in enabling me to do a particular job during the first week after surgery.

Imagine having reached your 79th birthday you are told you have developing cataracts in both eyes! Then, you are told to find an ophthalmic surgeon because an eye operation will be necessary ...... but ... under a local anaesthetic! Basically someone cutting into your eyes, or in my case both eyes, to remove the offending cataracts and implant new lenses!! All while fully aware of what's going on around you .... will I be able to "see" what the surgeon is doing?!! Fortunately for me, due to the NHS waiting time, my Benenden insurance agreed to cover the associated costs and I was given a choice of surgeons to carryout the procedure. Let's be totally honest I was petrified by the thought of one eye being operated on, leave alone both eyes! After a lot of careful research I opted for Mr Ferris at the Winfield Hospital in Gloucester. Before my first appointment I was sent information and links to various relevant online information courtesy of his secretary. Then we arranged a time for a telephone consultation with Mr Ferris for early the next evening. This was very useful because following a lot of questioning about my life style, hobbies, interests he explained in detail what the procedure involved! Next was a pre-op visit to see Mr Ferris. A nurse told me she was going to give me drops to dilate my pupils prior to seeing Mr Ferris. What's more, this bit would be the "worst part" of the entire procedure ... "it will sting a little bit!" Yea I bet! Well, it wasn't particularly uncomfortable but the worst part? Ummm! Next I was examined by Mr Ferris and he allayed all my fears and explained absolutely everything I needed to know. To be honest I was still sceptical, particularly about what I would be able to see and feel during the procedure. Less than two weeks later I was back for "the procedure". I won't say I was apprehensive, it was more like petrified! Into theatre I went and onto the operating table and the back of my head into the recess with instructions to stay as still as possible. My eyes were anaesthetised and, well, after that and for the next hour I experienced what I can only described as a "lights and water" show. I felt nothing and saw nothing but dancing colours and felt some drops of fluid running down the side of my face. Mr Ferris repeatedly checked I was comfortable and an hour later I was back in my day room. After a final check I was given a number of bottles of eye drops with strict instructions to complete the course. Which I did! After early 40 years of wearing glasses I now only need a +1.5 pair from Boots for close reading. My long distance sight is excellent Thanks to Mr Ferris and his team for a wonderful experience and a fantastic result. Try as I might I am unable to identify one aspect I could criticise from my first contact. Just brilliant!

Viewing the cataractsurgeryinfo.com website gives a good preview of Mr Ferris. When you actually meet him, you know exactly what to expect. He is very clear, unhurried and precise with his explanations of the cataract surgery process and the replacement lens options. I liked the fact that there was a face-to-face meeting with him before AND after the operation so that any relevant feedback could be directly transferred.

I found Mr Ferris to be friendly and confident while assessing my particular eye problems, giving clear information about the procedures, before and during the surgery, as well as being happy to answer questions. I decided to have both eyes dealt with on the same day, and was a bit nervous. During the surgery I was given the option to delay the second eye procedure, after the first, but there was no need as I was fine and happy to continue. It was amazing to be able to see clearly, and read, immediately afterward. However, the bright sunshine outside was a shock as sunglasses aren't possible while wearing the clear protective shields which are fitted for the remainder of the day. There was a slight aching around the eye sockets for a few hours, which paracetamol dealt with, but no other post op problems. I now have wonderful clear vision, with no need of the varifocal specs or reading specs I used to wear. Thank you to Mr John Ferris and all his helpful staff.

Having attended a previous clinic with Mr Ferris where all details of cataract removal were explained to me I was very relaxed when I arrived at the hospital on the day the operation was to take place. The staff were great and I was given a nice room to wait to be called. It was maybe a longer wait than anticipated but eventually a nurse took me for the process which was to remove cataracts from both eyes and fit new lenses. Mr Ferris completed this in a remarkably short time, without any pain or discomfort, and I was returned to my room for refreshments before leaving to return home.wonderful!! The results are unbelievable, the colors amazing and I now have better sight than my son. Many thanks.
