I am a retired Army officer I had retired from the armed forces after 35 years’ service. I had total right hip replacement surgery on 13th June 2019 at Spire Regency Hospital the surgeon was Mr Tahir Mahmud. This is a review of that surgery. At the time of my surgery I had just recovered from fractured back surgery that did not go well so I was very sceptical of the very much needed hip replacement. I was in dreadful pain, very confined and unable to walk far and unable to function properly on a daily basis. Mr Mahmud convinced me that the hip replacement would transform my life, I am glad to say he was absolutely correct the hip surgery has completely changed my life for the better. I am now able to walk, play golf and use the gym. I was delighted with my experience at Spire Regency Hospital under the care of Mr Tahir Mahmud. The hospital was spotlessly clean, the nurses were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble for Mr Mahmud I did say at the time that Mr Mahmud has a very gifted ability, a very rarer talent. I would fully recommend the Spire and Mr Tahir Mahmud without hesitation.

The surgery and aftercare experience were very supportive. The nine centimetre scar is neat and unobtrusive and there is no discomfort from the new joint. Mr Mahmud explained clearly with x rays before and after surgery the journey of hip replacement. The results five months further on are, brisk pain free walking with improved posture, increased energy levels, improved sleep and pain killers are no longer required as before surgery.

I had a total hip replacement and was grateful for the considerate and efficient treatment from Mr Mahmud. In the initial consultation he took time to explain my condition clearly so I could make an informed decision to have the surgery. The operation was carried out on time and I have made a very good recovery. I saw Mr Mahmud before surgery and each day whilst in hospital, and 2 post op appointments. I have received excellent care and would recommend Mr Mahmud without hesitation.

Unfortunately due to 15 years competing in extreme sports I have had my fair share of injuries, The ACL reconstruction last year performed by Mr Tahir Mahmud was definitely up there with one of the longest and hardest operation/recoveries I’ve dealt with. Mr Mahmud made it much easier from the start of the process to deal with and resolve the injury, He worked with myself to arrange the surgery around events and trips away and was more than happy to rearrange the schedule after a last minute opportunity that was dropped on me to take part in sport in America, which didn’t actually go through but there was never any hard feelings of wasting his time. Mr Mahmud was really understanding that sports meant a lot to me and seemed really interested in getting me back on my feet as soon as possible which was a huge confidence boost after the negative information I’d heard from friends and others that had had the same injury. Spire hospital and Mr Mahmud made the couple of days in hospital for the surgery a Very comfortable environment, I was first down to theatre on the day of the op which always helps with nerves and before that in the early morning I was guided and talked through what was happening by Mr Mahmud Himself in basic terms so I could understand the procedure as best as I could. After the operation the recovery was hard and a long process to get back to full fitness, Mr Mahmud was great in showing interest and guiding me through what was best to get going and what to and not to do to avoid any further injury. A few months went by after the ACL reconstruction and something wasn’t quite right with my knee which was no fault of Mr Mahmud, he was more than happy to get me in and check it out immediately and that led to further key hole surgery that he was very quick to organise himself rather than the usual route of the NHS which would of been a much longer resolution, I was in and out for surgery within a month of the call regarding the problem and everything was well. I’m now just a year down the line touching full fitness and I’ve miraculously managed 7 months of sports and activity since the surgery in October last year which I was worried that wouldn’t happen. Not only was Mr Mahmud a great help to me and a very professional man to deal with throughout my ACL reconstruction he gave the exact same service to my younger brother who was having the same surgery due to a very similar injury as myself, Mr Mahmud worked with us both to arrange the operations just 2 weeks apart from each other, After the surgery he arranged follow up appointments together to save driving to the hospital separately, saving time down the line for other patients and making the experience much easier allowing us to have the same recovery time to work together to get back to full health Overall a fantastic doctor thats succesfully helped my brother and myself and as importantly to us both was always very welcoming with a smile on his face Thanks Matthew Hockenhull

My experience was overwhelmingly positive from first consultation to advice and information through to surgery and post op follow up. I felt listened to and well informed at every step. Any questions I had were handled with great knowledge but also patience and a calming manner. The procedure was also well organised, preparation was excellent and I was seen afterwards both immediately post op and in follow up to ensure that the operation was a success. Excellent care and a great success

Following an initial consultation with Mr Mahmud, he arranged for an MRI scan for my knees and following receipt of the results, he moved things along very quickly. I found Mr Mahmud to be a very experienced consultant and he knew following my first consultation what was the initial best treatment for me, which again he arranged very speedily and am now pleased to say that i am in recovery A big thank you to Mr Mahmud and his team, would have no hesitation in recommending

I went to see Mr Mahmud about a problem with my knee and after being advised of all the options I decided to have an arthroscopy. From the initial appointment Mr Mahmud explained everything and answered any questions I had. The surgery was quick and the results are amazing. I would thoroughly recommend Mr Mahmud to anyone else needing this type of surgery. He has a very pleasant and professional manner.

Explanation

At the start of this year I had my second ACL reconstruction (both performed by Dr Mahmud). At the age of 27 I never dreamed that I would have had two knee surgeries, but should I ever go through a similar injury again I would always choose Dr Mahmud as my surgeon. His professionalism, friendliness and above all the level of care he shows to his patients is second to none, as well as his commitment to finding the very best solution. When my injuries first occurred, it was difficult to see a day when I would be back to “normal” - even jogging up the road to catch a bus would be impossible. Thanks to Dr Mahmud, I recently ran my first half marathon, I’m back to playing sports, and I’m stronger and fitter than I’ve ever been. Each day is now pain free and I’m back to doing the things I enjoy - I’ll forever be thankful and couldn’t recommend him more.

I found Mr Mahmud to have a very pleasant, gentle manner who put me at my ease so I could discuss all aspects of my damaged knee without feeling rushed. He spoke clearly and at my first appointment he examined my knee and said that an MRI scan would be required to see the extent of the damage to the meniscus. He showed me the result of the scan and he explained that I would need a knee arthroscopy to enable me to walk at the pace and distance that I had previously been able to achieve. This was important to me as I had been leading a ladies weekly walking group when we covered between 10 to 15 miles depending upon terrain and weather. He explained clearly, with diagrams, how the operation would proceed and that left alone without an operation the meniscus would never heal. He also mentioned that there was a chance that the operation would not greatly improve my ability to walk to my previous standard although without the operation there was no chance of a substantial improvement. He told me that I would not require crutches immediately after the operation. The operation went very smoothly and the two small holes in my knee healed very quickly with no infection. It is five weeks since my operation and the swelling in my knee has almost gone and I can walk two or three miles with little discomfort. I can go up and down stairs and at times I forget that I have had an operation. My age, I am told, is against a rapid recovery, but I am delighted with my progress so far and it is all due to the work of a very skilled surgeon.

I like the way that Mr Mahmud explained the process of having my hip replacement and left the decision to myself. The standard of care before during and after my operation was excellent.
