Explanation

I struck gold as a patient when Declan Cahill was recommended to me. With him you feel you are getting not only the best that he can do, but the very best that could be done anywhere. You also feel that nothing matters more to him than you personally and your individual outcome, and that all of his self-evidently exceptional skill, assured (yet not remotely arrogant) authority and determination will be focused accordingly. He convinced me of this at our first meeting, having initially gone to him for a second opinion, and it's since been more than justified. He communicates superbly: technically, as a surgeon, in explaining your situation and the options plainly and simply; but also on a human level, embodying competence, compassion, control and inspiring confidence and calm that put you at your ease in a troubling situation so that your trust is complete. Nothing could be more important when what you need, after a disturbing prostate cancer diagnosis with so much uncertainty and so many variables, is optimal clarity that the treatment is right for you and that the doctor caring for you will play to the hilt the hand you have been dealt. This is not to suggest that Declan Cahill will take unwarranted risks but rather that he will make the most of what's possible for you, about which he is admirably direct without creating false expectations. Everything before, during and after my RARP last June has gone as well as he said it would, if not better. He is constantly there for you by phone or email, calling me the day before to see how I was and even calling my partner once I was out of theatre with reassurance that he’d achieved the fully nerve-sparing procedure on both sides that we’d hoped for – that call was a priceless touch that others might have delegated. He appears to have thought through and anticipated absolutely everything, as his website shows in the quality, quantity and sheer practical utility of information he makes available to his patients. And it’s not only him, but also the magnificent team he has assembled that make you feel so incredibly well supported and safe, particularly (in my case) Nurse Consultant Dr Netty Kinsella and Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Ramanathan Kasivisvanathan, as well as the ward staff at London Bridge Hospital (Guy's Cancer Centre) and Chris Cottrell and Emily Curtis at The Exercise Clinic who ensured I was well prepared for the procedure; real strength in depth across the board. It’s true that I was fortunate in presenting at a very early stage so that all of the malignancy could be removed without having to take anything else of significance. Yet I'm also absolutely certain that the overall outcome is only as good as it is because of Declan Cahill and his team. He continues to monitor me, but my PSA is currently undetectable 7 months on with none of the notorious potential side effects. When I was researching treatment options, I read that Declan was "the best of the best", “outstanding”, a “top man” who “goes the extra mile” - even a "superstar" - and I wondered if all that could really be true: now I know that it is. I owe him an incalculable debt and I cannot recommend him highly enough to anyone who finds themselves where I was last spring. I hope I have explained why. He is a tremendous urological surgeon and I cannot imagine one better.

Reply from Declan Cahill

Wow. I blush. How kind. I’m glad you feel this way. It’s easy to do once you start with the patient at the centre of care. Then everything falls into place. If I have managed to achieve this for you I am delighted. It’s everything I try to do. I very very touched by your summary. As you rightly put it, it’s a team production! Thank you.

Mr Declan Cahill is a great Consultant. He takes great care to be supportive , and has a good bedside manner, which really puts you at ease, in what is often a very stressful time being diagnosed with prostrate cancer. I am the other side of the robotic surgery and have had my prostrate removed. This all went very smoothly, and my PSA is now undetectable which I have Declan to thank for that. I have had no issues with recovery, and I have full function of my bladder, currently working on my ED. Thank you to Declan and all his team.
