Mr Stewart is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon with over 20 years experience in the management of varicose veins. He is an advocate of minimally invasive varicose vein treatments, having adopted ultrasound guided endothermal techniques early in his consultant career. He introduced the ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy technique to the Nuffield Hospital in Taunton in 2008 and has gained a wealth of knowledge and expertise to guide patients on the optimal treatments for their varicose veins. He has expertise in the management of arterial disease including intermittent claudication, severe peripheral arterial disease, aortic aneurysms and carotid artery disease.
Mr Stewart undertook his undergraduate medical training at Cambridge University and postgraduate surgical training in the South West of England. He was awarded a Medical Doctorate by Cambridge University in 2005 for his research on exercise therapy as a treatment for intermittent claudication. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Member of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He is the Clinical Lead for Vascular Surgery and Clinical Director of the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening programme for Somerset and North Devon.
Mr Stewart has an enthusiasm for teaching and passing on his specialist knowledge to surgical trainees. He spent 5 years as Training Programme Director for Vascular Surgery in the SW of England and oversaw the introduction of a new specialist training programme for vascular surgeons. He has an NHS vascular practice based at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton and Yeovil District Hospital.
