Clinical dermatology: CRP has been a consultant dermatologist for more than 20 years. He is a clinical dermatologist who is happiest seeing patients. He is active in all areas of clinical dermatology, notably surgical dermatology, especially the treatment of skin cancer, melanoma and Dupuytren's contracture. He probably has the most experience of anyone in the UK in treating Dupuytren's contracture by needle aponeurotomy (percutaneous needle fibrotomy). He pioneered the treatment of percutaneous retrodermal curettage for axillary hyperhidrosis. He has been very active, both at home and abroad, in teaching these novel treatments for Dupuytren's contracture and hyperhidrosis. He has with others, established multidisciplinary teams to deliver care to patients with melanoma and Dupuytren's contracture. In 2005, as a director of MoleMonitor, he was instrumental in establishing the Mole Service (mole mapping by total skin photography and serial dermoscopy) which is now located at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. Since 2009, he has been Chairman of The London Clinic Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Team (MDT). In 2015, his own purpose-designed consulting rooms were opened at 27 Devonshire Place beside The London Clinic.

Scientific literature: CRP was a co-author of the first paper in the world literature (1985) to describe the skin manifestations of AIDS & HIV. His work on nodular prurigo is the standard reference. For "Bimodality in age of onset of psoriasis, in both patients and their relatives", with others, he won the British Association of Dermatologists' biennial Wycombe Chair and Prize for 1993 & 1994 ("awarded for an outstanding contribution to dermatology published from a non-teaching centre"). He was co-author of seminal work from Paris on toxic epidermal necrolysis. Rowland Payne's syndrome (Horner's with ipsilateral phrenic and vocal cord palsies) appears in standard textbooks of neurology and is listed in Magalini's Dictionary of Medical Syndromes. He coined the terms and wrote the original descriptions of the "Sunbed Suntan SacroScapular Sparing Sign", the "cornflake sign" (in Kyrle-Flegel disease) and the "deckchair sign" (in papuloerytheroderma). He has published many scientific papers and chapters in books and is on many Journal Editorial Boards. He is Joint Editor of the new international multiauthor comprehensive multidisciplinary textbook, "Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery", published by CRC Press/Taylor & Francis in 2016.

In 1984-85, for one year, he was Professeur Universitaire at the Université de Paris, where he saw patients, taught French medical students and postgraduates, contributed to major publications on toxic epidermal necrolysis and participated in research into the growing of artificial living skin equivalent. On his return to London, having been awarded an MRC project grant, he established a new tissue culture laboratory at Westminster Hospital. In 2014 he was Visiting Professor of Dermatology at the University of Aksum in Ethiopia. At the invitation of The President of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) CRP gave the RSM's 2017 Stevens Lecture for the Laity on "Skin cancer and sun addiction".

In 1997, he was one of the cofounders of the European Society for Cosmetic and Aesthetic Dermatology (ESCAD) (President 1997-98, Sec-Gen 1997-2014). In 2001 he became the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, a fully indexed journal considered to be the foremost journal in the field. He organised the ESCAD Annual Scientific Meetings from 1997-2014 and he helped organise the Cosmoderm series of international congresses from 2000-2014. His contribution to cosmetic dermatology has been recognised by the European Academy of DermatoVenereology (EADV), who asked him to give their plenary lectures, "What is the role of aesthetic medicine in today's dermatology" in Vienna in 2007 & "Ageing of the skin" in Krakow in 2013, and by the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM), who in 2008 asked him to establish & lead their annual RSM Aesthetics Meetings (The RSM's International Scientific Multidisciplinary Annual Aesthetics Meetings); RSM Aesthetics 9 took place at the RSM in February 2017.
