Dr Dr Alastair O'Brien is a Consultant Hepatologist specialising in Hepato Pancreato Biliary Medicine.

After qualifying from Guys and St Thomas' Medical School in 1994, he completed gastroenterology and general medicine training on the South Thames rotation. Following this, he undertook his hepatology training at King's College, The Royal London and University College London Hospitals (UCLH). He was a Medical Research Council clinical training fellow at University College London and was awarded a PhD for his research into the use of terlipressin as rescue therapy for septic shock.

In 2007, Dr O'Brien was appointed as Consultant and Clinical Senior Lecturer in Hepatology at UCLH and The Royal Free Hospitals. At ULCH he is responsible for the inpatient management of all causes of acute and chronic liver disease. He runs an outpatients clinic at the Royal Free Hospital and sees patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, viral hepatitis (B & C), metabolic and alcohol related liver disease. He also has extensive experience in upper GI endoscopy especially management of variceal bleeding.

Dr O'Brien has been published in a number of leading journals including Nature Medicine, The Lancet, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Proceedings of The National Academy of Science. He was recently awarded funding for £1.6million by the Wellcome Trust and Department of Health to build a multi-centre clinical trial to prevent infection in cirrhosis patients. He has also gained funding from the Medical Research Council, The UCLH Biomedical Research Centre, and Industry (Pfizer).
