Mr Michéal O'Rourke is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with over 10 years of experience, specialising in oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery, as well as translational and clinical research in ocular immunology. He holds a public appointment at the Mater University Hospital, Dublin. Mr O'Rourke obtained his medical degree (MB BCh BAO) from Trinity College, Dublin in 2007. Following this, he became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2013. Subsequently, he pursued a FEBO certification from the European Board of Ophthalmology. Mr O’Rourke also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland and a PhD in Ocular Immunology from University College Dublin, Ireland. In 2019, he became a Fellow in Ophthalmology of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
Mr O'Rourke qualified as an eye surgeon following dedicated training accross ophthalmology. His skillset includes cataract surgery and he has delivered efficient, lean transformative change in optimising efficiency for cataract surgery - both routine and complex cases. He is fellowship trained in oculoplastics (periocular tumour control and reconstruction, ptosis, ectropion, entropion, trichiasis, blepharoplasty, facial palsy, Botox injections), lacrimal surgery (epiphora, intubation, DCR - endoscopic & external), orbital surgery (thyroid eye disease, decompression, tumours, enucleation / evisceration, socket care), and paediatric oculoplastics (ptosis, dermoid, epiphora).
Throughout his career, Mr O'Rourke has published multiple peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on various topics related to his field of expertise. He remains active in clinical research and collaborates with other specialties and international research groups and was recently appointed UCD Assistant Clinical Professor as adjunct faculty with the school of medicine.
