What is Ophthalmology?

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. It covers the diagnosis and treatment of such conditions, and can involve complex microsurgery. They also manage patients with acute and long term eye disease and treat people of every age.

It’s exciting to know that ophthalmic surgery has come along in leaps and bounds recently. Dramatic improvements in technology mean equally dramatic improvements in patient care and outcomes, and many eye surgeries that used to be inpatient-based are now day cases. The trend is likely to continue as more fascinating medical and scientific discoveries are made.

What procedures can you find at an Ophthalmology clinic?

  • Diagnosis and monitoring
  • Cataract surgery
  • Glaucoma surgery
  • Retinal surgery
  • Injections
  • Procedures to treat tear duct infection and blockage
  • Neoplasm removal (removing foreign objects)
  • Cancer treatments
  • Immune system treatments
  • Reconstructive surgery
  • Strabismus surgery (to correct squints)
  • Corneal transplants
  • Plastic surgery in the eye area (oculoplastic surgery)
  • Orbital surgery around the socket

What should you expect at an Ophthalmology clinic?

Your general practice doctor might refer you directly to an ophthalmologist if you have the symptoms of cataracts, eye infections, optic nerve issues or anything else that looks wrong with your eye or eyes.  Your visit will almost always include an eye examination – often a refraction test, a slit lamp test, glaucoma test, colour blindness test or magnified lens test – as well as taking a detailed medical history and asking questions about family history and medications.  You can get answers to your own questions, too. Once the results of all this are analysed you’ll be given a treatment plan, and your choices will be clearly explained.
