What is Obstetrics and Gynaecology?

Obstetrics and gynaecology combines surgery and medicine. It defines the care of pregnant women, unborn children, and the associated diseases that are specific to females. While obstetrics focuses on childbirth itself, prenatal care, pregnancy support and postpartum care, gynaecology involves general healthcare with a focus on the female reproductive organs.

Obstetricians are doctors specialising in problems around preconception, pregnancy, childbirth, and the female reproductive system as a whole. If the health problem falls outside pregnancy, they don’t treat it. An obstetrician can also deliver a baby as well as scarring for you throughout your pregnancy, monitoring your health and that of the baby, and offering ongoing healthcare. Pregnancy care involves ultrasounds, measurements, tests and more. A gynaecologist is a surgeon specialising in women’s reproductive systems, diagnosing everything from menstrual problems, infertility issues, contraception, and sexuality to prenatal care. They don’t deliver babies or treat pregnant women, but they do carry out cancer screening and treat things like infections and ovarian cysts, and they carry out cervical cancer tests.

When should you see an Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist?

If you’re expecting a child, want to become pregnant, or are a female suffering from problems with your reproductive system, it makes sense to see a Dubai obstetrics and gynaecology specialist. They understand how the female body’s complex reproductive organs and systems work, and will be able to support a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

While your own family doctor will help you with your pregnancy, a Dubai obstetrician and gynaecologist is useful when you’re over 35 years old, or you’re experiencing a high-risk pregnancy. If you start having complications, expert specialist help matters, someone trained in every aspect of pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal care. They’ll help by monitoring your health and the baby’s health, answering your questions, and letting you know what to expect at every stage. They can also deliver your child. A qualified gynaecologist should be your first stop if you’re experiencing unexplained health problems, even if it’s as simple as recurrent, irregular periods, extreme period pain, discomfort during sex and more, all of which can be assessed, diagnosed and treated by your gynaecologist.

How to find and choose the best Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist?

How much does a private Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist appointment cost in Dubai?

The cost of a private obstetrics and gynaecology appointment in Dubai varies widely. It depends on how fast you want to be seen, and on the level of expertise of the specialist you choose and their specialities, as well as what you need to see them for, how long it takes and whether you need tests.  Most good obs and gynae specialists’ websites include a price list.

What happens at an Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist appointment?
