Professor Owen Judd qualified in Medicine from the University of Nottingham in 1998. He trained in Anaesthetics, Emergency Medicine and Paediatrics in the south west of England before concentrating on surgical training and completed basic surgical training in General and Vascular surgery, Cardiothoracic surgery, Orthopaedics, Trauma, Neurosurgery and Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery (ENT).
He completed Higher Surgical Training in ENT in Plymouth, Southampton, London and the East Midlands and is a Fellow of all four Royal Surgical Colleges of England, Ireland, Edinburgh and Glasgow. He holds a rare dual fellowship being one of only a few surgeons to also hold a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.
Prof Judd has a special interest in Laryngology (Voice disorders) and Neurotology (disorders of the brain and ear, especially balance, dizziness and facial paralysis). He undertook a highly prestigious specialist Fellowship in Neurotology and Otological implantation at Queen's Medical Centre. Professor Judd now runs specialist Voice, Balance and Dizziness clinics for both adults and children alongside Otology (Ear), and general ENT clinics. He also has expertise in complex facial pain and migraine.
Professor Judd's surgical expertise includes an innovative minimally invasive Endoscopic Ear Surgery. This allows complex mastoid and ear surgery, including Stapedectomy and Ossiculoplasty to be performed with no external scar and reconstructs to a normal ear. He is one of only a handful of Surgeons in the Country and indeed, the World to be an expert on this new evolving technique. He has lectured internationally on the technique.
In voice disorders, Prof. Judd has surgical expertise in complex cases including the use of local anaesthetic, minimally invasive techniques for restoring the voice.
He practices as a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon with a special interest in Neurotology and Laryngology at the Royal Derby Hospital and is a recognised lecturer and teacher and holds a prestigious Visiting Professorship in Balance Medicine from the BMJ India, as well as previously an Honorary Associate (Clinical) Professorship in Medical Education of the University of Nottingham. Previously, Prof Judd held the position of Honorary Lecturer of the University of Leicester and has a Post-Graduate Diploma in Clinical Education. He has trained many medical students and junior doctors and is also a regular International speaker as Visiting Professor for the BMJ Masterclasses in Vertigo and Dizziness in India.
Aside from this, Professor Judd is actively involved in research in all aspects of ENT, but especially complex ear disorders, balance disorders, and the voice. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed and invited papers in national and international journals, including 11 cochrane systematic reviews (the highest level of research evidence) and 6 book chapters. He has published two textbooks and is currently writing two further books. During his spare time, Prof Judd enjoys sailing and taking care of his two delightful children.

Professor Owen Judd demonstrates a professional approach during patient interactions, offers clarity, and provides reassurance. He performs specific procedures such as microsuction and laryngoscopy; patients report comfort during treatment. Many appreciate his extensive knowledge, detailed diagnoses, and practical advice for recovery or improving symptoms. His expertise covers various ENT concerns, with significant focus on adult ear, nose, and throat surgery, dizziness, and balance problems.
Straightforward and very open. Did not ‘talk down’ to me despite me having very little knowledge of my complaint. Asked very pertinent questions and thoroughly tested for information on the periphery before coming to a conclusion.
After many years suffering with dizziness Professor Judd identified the source and reasons behind it all. His advice and guidance solved this in 2 visits and ensured my GP knew how to treat it for the future. I also suffer with a severe balance problem and Professor Judd has advised on how to improve this for the future with a series of exercises which are already improving my situation.
Very professional and explained at a technical level that was relevant without being patronising
Dr Judd took his time to assess my symptoms, very professional and polite person explained what the cause could be and gave me some good advice Was nice meeting him
Brilliant doctor, extremely knowledgeable and also very understanding. Could not recommend more. Has been a real life-saver for me.
Brilliant. Been waiting for referral from the doctors ( taking forever) Paid to see professor Owen and worth every, very thorough. Thank you
I have known Professor Judd since he was a trainee and now as a consultant colleague. I know him as an expert professional who treats patients and other healthcare workers with respect; makes the time to hear, listen and go out of his way to help others. Professor Judd has a professional manner and way of explaining conditions that gives confidence you are in the right hands. He has a wide range of expertise in General ENT, including laryngology, ear surgery and balance disorders. I would have no hesitation in referring my family members to Professor Judd.
