Professor Eden carried out my robotic prostatectomy, the results were amazing, and I am completely cancer free. This was life changing surgery for me and I have recommended friends suffering from similar conditions to him with very satisfactory results. Professor Eden is treating my 94-year-old father, the care and attention shown to him was beyond his highest expectations, for which we are very grateful.

Explanation

I was fortunate enough to meet with Professor Eden after having concerns about the results of my PSA test in February. It wasn't so much the level of PSA which was normal, but the percent free PSA ratio which was low. The GP I arranged the test through wasn't overly concerned and suggested a follow up PSA check in a year. My father died of prostate cancer so the family history was extremely important in my case. My wife insisted we arrange an appointment to get the advice of a specialist which we did, and Professor Eden was our first choice. He has an outstanding reputation in this field and we both felt confident discussing my concerns, even if they were unfounded. Professor Eden was extremely calming and professional, suggesting he would like a full picture of my prostate health rather than a "wait and see"approach. He understood my concerns about the free PSA ratio and suggested MRI as the first step. I was in no way pressured to have any tests done but felt relieved to speak with a specialist consultant who shared my concerns. The results of my MRI were suspicious so the next stage suggested by Professor Eden was a prostate biopsy. Unfortunately prostate cancer was detected after the biopsy with Gleeson 3 + 4 but my suspicions were realised and although shocked with the diagnosis, I was relieved that the cancer had been detected at this early stage. Professor Eden offered me several choices of treatment, one of which was the bilateral nerve preserving radical prostatectomy which I elected to have. Given my family history of prostate cancer it was an easy choice to make. Professor Eden is a pioneer of this nerve sparing surgery and after discussing everything in great detail the surgery went ahead. I cannot describe how elated I am with the results. I was literally in hospital for two nights with a catheter for a fortnight following the surgery. With minimal physio and pelvic floor exercises I was back to work and out and about in under three weeks. It is now three and a half months since my surgery and I can honestly say I am feeling great and very nearly back to normal. My first 3 month post op PSA level was almost zero so I am delighted to say the least. Professor Eden has always been available at short notice and insisted I get in touch with any problems. The whole process was and continues to be incredibly professional and sympathetic. I am honoured to have been lucky enough to be in the care of Professor Eden and I cannot recommend him highly enough. If you have any concerns about your prostate, PSA results or feel you could do with a second opinion then please take my advice and speak to someone. My obvious choice would be Professor Eden.

Explanation

In May 2023 I was offered a routine PSA blood test by my GP surgery as part of a trial whereby men over 50 were tested and then fast tracked if any problems were found. I had no symptoms or any suggestion that anything was wrong. My PSA was found to be 15, and so a full course of investigations was arranged. At my local NHS hospital, I had an MRI scan, biopsy, bone density scan and several sessions with different Consultants and my options were explained. My prostate cancer was localised but I had a Gleason score of 7 (4+3), Group 3, and I agreed that my prostate cancer needed to be treated. My initial view was I favoured brachytherapy, were radioactive seeds are placed in your body, in or near the tumour, mainly as this was non-invasive. My wife did extensive research, and she was very much of the opinion that surgery was the far better option. My concern about surgery was I may become incontinent, but with brachytherapy, if any surgery was needed subsequently, this might be by problematic. I decided, therefore, to go for the surgery option. Again, thanks to my wife, she discovered the successful outcome of a prostatectomy is significantly enhanced when performed by high volume surgeons. She also found Professor Christopher Eden, one of the world’s leading prostate cancer surgeons, specialising in robotic prostatectomy. After an initial consultation with Professor Eden at the end of July 2023, my surgery was arranged for 16th August, at Guy’s Cancer Centre (Part of HCA Healthcare), in London. From the initial consultation, to my admission to the hospital, the surgery, and the couple of days I was an inpatient following surgery, the care I received was outstanding. On the day of the surgery, Professor Eden and his anaesthetist came to see me, and immediately after my surgery Professor Eden came to see my wife who was waiting in my room. He also came to see me of both the following days. My catheter was removed after two weeks and I was almost fully continent straight away, but wore a precautionary pad for a week or so after that. This was really to give me some confidence rather than being necessary. Professor Eden was very clear, confident and informative, explaining all options and expectations, and I would recommend his and his team at HCA Healthcare without hesitation. I would also say, the Santis fixed price proctectomy for a self-funding patient such as myself was a factor in choosing Santis/HCA Heathcare.
