    About

I am a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon based at Ramsay Fulwood Hall Hospital. I am experienced, working as a consultant at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Ramsay for over 20 years. I largely specialise in hip and knee conditions, performing approximately 360 hip and knee replacements each year. I also perform hip resurfacing procedures, partial knee replacements and knee arthroscopy.

I began began my training at St Andrew's University, where I achieved a BScMed Sci degree in 1986 before going on to complete my medical degree (MBChB) at the University of Manchester. I then spent time in various junior training roles around the North West of England before embarking upon orthopaedic training in Edinburgh as well as a year-long fellowship in Adelaide, South Australia. I became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1994 and gained my FRCS (Tr&Orth) in 1999.

I enjoy clinical research and have published more than 30 peer reviewed papers in medical journals. I won the Zimmer Research Prize in 2001, and my current research interests are patient-centred outcomes in orthopaedic surgery and results of hip fracture surgery.

I have always had a passion for medical education and I am a certified orthopaedic trainer. I was an orthopaedic national examiner for 10 years to 2019 and now teach on the European Trauma Course.

As well as the bio above, more detailed information on my practice and procedures performed is available at my personal website - www.g2orthopaedics.co.uk

I was aprehensive regards having an hip replacement. In fact i put it off for 7 years, even after xrays showed it was severe. I tried physio , medication anything to avoid the opperation. However i succumbed and was refered. I chose Fulwood hall hospital. My consultant was Mr McLauchlan. I coul not have had a better experience. Then the opperation day he visited me pre opp. So assuring...then it was time. It couldnt have gone better. All that worry for nothing. I saw Mr McLauchlan one year on and again he was so assuring. I cant thank him enough, and would recommend him highly to anyone. Given the chance...choose him. O certainly would again. I thank him for my experience and outcome. My opperation was so successful and my life much improved since. If anyone reading this is concerned whether to have the hip replacement opperation. Please have consultation go for it...lifes too short.

Mr McLauchlan took the time to answer my questions and to listen to my concerns. He treated me with respect, making me feel that my questions were worth answering and that my concerns were valid. He explained clearly the outcomes that I could expect from having a knee replacement. This helped me make the decision to have the operation and motivated me to keep working at my recovery after the operation.

I have been a patient of Mr Mclauchlan for many years. My first experience was when I was a Football League Referee he successfully trimmed both my knee cartilage. I then returned recently due to pain in my left knee, he advised me that only surgery would remove the problem, however not convinced I payed for other treatment with another doctor which was not very successful and at some cost. I returned to Mr. Mclauchlan after consultation he advised me to replace half my left knee. The main reason for returning to Mr Mclauchlan was the fact that he is easy to talk to and shows you the x-ray explains what surgery he is about to perform. After the operation he visited me in hospital explaining what I had to do to get a full recovery. This I did and I am pleased to say I have returned to refereeing which I am great full for. I have had two consultations since the operation, both with x-rays I was able to look at my progress. If I had any questions they were answered to my satisfaction. In conclusion I should have listened to his advice at the first consultation, and not been Mr Cleaver spending a large amount of money on hope. I recommend Mr Mclauchlan with out any hesitation he is friendly and approachable and a very nice man.

The pre-op explanation of what was involved was clear and reassuring. Despite the operation taking place during Covid restrictions the procedure - from arrival at hospital to discharge - went smoothly. Early on the morning of discharge Mr McLauchlan spoke to me to check how I was. All in all, a good experience - or as good an experience to be expected from this operation!
